Judges’ salaries too low says Law Society spokesman Higher salaries for judges sitting in B.C. provincial courts are sup- ported by the head of the Law Society of B.C. Robert Dick was disappointed by a provincial legislature decision to set provincial court judges’ salaries at $103,000 in 1991 and $107,000 in 1992. ; A compensation advisory com- mittee had recommended salaries of $110,000 in 1991 and $116,000 in 1992. Dick said the lower amounts will widen the gap between sala- ries paid to provincial court judges and federal court judges. ‘@ Fair salaries for provincial court judges are essential to attract the best qualified people to the bench, Dick said. In 1990 federal judges made $42,000 more annually than pro- vincial court judges, Dick added. “The provincial court is truly a people’s court. Most people have contact with the justice system through this court, before these ieosde judges,” he said. Provincial courts are held in 101 locations throughout B.C. The sys- tem handles all young offender trials, most criminal cases, civil claims up to $10,000, small claims and family matters.
