Jail term is
ordered for
spousal assauli

A second spousal assault within
five months led to a nine-month
jail sentence for Robert Russel
Daum, 33, of Sidney.

Sidney RCMP reported Daum
choked his estranged wife into
unconsciousness ina June 8 attack
at the woman’s Sidney home. The
assault occurred nine days after
Daum was placed on 12 months
probation for a Feb. 27 assault on
the same woman.

In Victoria provincial court
Thursday, Daum pleaded guilty to
common assault and to breaking
and entering.

Judge Lawrence Brahan recom-
mended Daum serve the sentence
at Alouette River where alcohol
counselling is available.

Brahan placed Daum on one
year’s probation following the jail

Pub proposed for Wallace Drive site

An application to build a
neighborhood pub in Brentwood
Bay received approval in principle
from Central Saanich council
recently, allowing it to go to the
referendum process.

The proposal is for a 65-seat
neighborhood pub with a 20-seat
patio and 40-seat restaurant to be
built on Wallace Drive opposite
the Trafalgar Square shopping
centre.

Applicant Peter Naysmith, rep-
resenting his business partners John
and Dick Alessio, told council that
