te a a ¢ News oe : : : : Local control of airport is open issue The group examining local con- trol of the Victoria Airport has asked Transport Canada for a study on the feasibility of taking management out of federal hands. The Victoria Airport Planning Society last week requested formal recognition by Transport Minister Jean Corbeil to open up a dialogue and negotiate the transfer of con- trol to a local airport authority. It’s the latest step in the society's year-long effort to exam- ine the issue. Society president Don Hancock said successful negotiations could be concluded within 18 months. “In reality, we can’t determine whether it is or it isn’t feasible until we do this base case study,” he said in a interview. The society has no preconceived notions that local control will be good for the region, he said. “We have an open mind. We see Leaking fuel causes fire Two men were taken to hospital with minor burns after a 20-foot commercial crab boat burst into flames in the north basin of the North Saanich Marina about 7:30 p.m. Thursday. North Saanich volunteer fire Chief Terry Towle said leaking fuel and the use of a portable pump are suspected as the cause of the blaze. “They had a makeshift electric pump they were using to pump it out and it seems a spark from the pump caused the explosion,” Towle said. The boat’s owners, Tony and Steve Donaldson, escaped serious injury by leaping into the water, Towle said. One of the men had singed hair. Two volunteer firemen donned air packs before entering the vessel and extinguishing “hot spots” under its floor boards. “Anytime were around an atmosphere like that, that’s our procedure,” Towle said about the safety equipment. Apparently, the owners thought they were pumping water out of the bottom of the boat. The boat did not sink but was pulled away from the dock and anchored to shore overnight to ensure the safe- ty of other boats in the area. In other fire department news, North Saanich crews responded to a tree on fire in the Towner park area and a report of branches against Hydro power lines on Birch Road: Both calls were the result of high winds and “winter conditions in August,” Towle said. The fire department safeguards the area until Hydro crews arrive, shut the power off and trim back the trees. THE HOUSE DRESSING (Se 6) INE SR NINE lee Ge A UNIQUE HOME ACCESSORIES SHOP. It is now a non-profit society. It received support from the three Peninsula municipalities as well as other Greater Victoria local governments. The mandate authorizes the TheReview Wednesday, September 4, 1991 — A5 society to begin negotiations with Transport Canada, provided Trans- port Canada agrees, and conduct the study, which would be financed by the federal govern- ment.
