by Girard Hengen The Review. The door-knocking, phoning and electioneering is about to begin for the Reform Party of B.C in Saanich North and The Islands. Last week, Don Hutchings was acclaimed by about 30 RPBC members as their candidate in the coming election. After the meeting, Hutchings said he expects an election call in late September or October. In the meantime, he plans to form a committee right away to get his campaign going. “We start (the campaign) tomor- row,” Hutchings told the assem- bled last Tuesday night at the Central Saanich Lions Hall. He and North Vancouver-based patty president Ron Gamble said the night was “historic” for the nationwide reform movement. “T am the first member of a reform party in any province in Canada (to be nominated),” said Hutchings, a 42-year-old Saanich: small businessman. “History, to be honest, is being made today,” he said. He pledged to uphold the five platforms of the RPBC, which is DON HUTCHINGS Hutchings, the former president of the RPC’s Saanich-Gulf Islands constituency, said, “I’ve got abso- lutely no political baggage. “T don’t owe anybody anything. I’m the only candidate in Saanich North who can guarantee to repre- sent the constituents and not the party.” Gamble said Hutchings is the first of at least three candidates the party expects to nominate across the province. Others are likely in “Reformers start campaign with candidate He said the party’s entry into the race gives constituents “an Opportunity to vote positively for something as opposed to voting against something.” Although the RPBC and RPC are distinct, much of the time at the meeting was spent discussing links between the two. The federal party under Preston Manning has vowed to cancel memberships of anyone sitting on a provincial reform party execu- tive. The relationship between the two parties‘has been strained, and RPBC members at the meeting Tejected a motion to send a letter to Manning indicating a wish for closer co-operation. Tinting = Lid.
