First Nations, arts and gardens are among the topics, along with a special lunchtime discussion ser- ies. The lunchtime series includes a lecture and discussion, followed by lunch at the lodge. The first speaker, on Oct. 16, will be University of Victoria Pres- ident Dr. David Strong, who will speak on the potential of the university. On Oct. 23, Major General James Tedlie will speak on his experience as a peace keeper on Cyprus and on Nov. 12, John Dougan will speak on his career in the diplomatic service. A special program, First Nations Education: From Past Traditions to Future Dreams, will be offered in the cultural centre of the Lau,Welnew Tribal School, Bren- twood. Instructors will be Saanich Indian School Board chief execu- tive officer Edith Baker and Lau,welnew principal Loretta Hall. The course will be offered from Sept. 23 to Nov. 4. Starting Sept. 26, award- winning fiber artist Gail Bradshaw will conduct a course on Fiber Art: Beyond Technique. Enrollment is limited for this class, which will teach design and combination of different techniques. Gardeners will be interested in The Art of Garden Making: Clas- sic Horticulturists, which will review the work of influential gardeners William Robinson, Ger- trude Jekyll and Vita Sackville- West. The course will be held Oct. 16, 23 and Nov. 12. William Butler Yeats: Poems and Plays will review the work of Yeats in three sessions, Oct. 16, 23 and Novy. 12, under the direction of Dr. Stanley Freiberg. Classical music lovers will appreciate the For the Love of Music series, which will review the life and work of each of the composers featured in the Master- works Series of the Victoria Sym- phony. Each lecture will take place in the week preceding the related Victoria Symphony concert. The series starts Sept. 27. Another program ties into the three productions of the Pacific Opera of Victoria with Who is that Masked Man? Trickery and Intri- gue at the Opera. Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte, Strauss’ Die Fledermaus and Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschero will be reviewed. Sessions will be held Oct. 11, Feb. 7 and April 3. Gain wisdom on owls with a two part workshop on Nov. 12 and 13 entitled The Owls of British Columbia. The workshop includes a lecture and a field trip. Two study groups will be meet- ing at Dunsmuir Lodge, one on Belief Systems and the Meaning of Life and one on Areas of World Conflict, 1980 to 2000. The first group will meet from Sept. 26 to Nov. 14 and the second from Oct. 1 to Nov. 26. Police search for Volkswagen van Sidney RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in finding an older-model white Volkswagen van with bright green trim after it was reported to be involved in a hit and run accident on Third Street in Sidney, about 11 a.m. Friday.
