Sports Youth bikes fo Ontario for family visit Most people can probably think of better ways to spend the sum- mer than biking half-way across Canada. While many were relaxing in the outdoors, Blair Fisher was labor- ing on his 14-speed touring bike from Brentwood Bay to Ajax, a town just outside of Toronto. Fisher, an 18-year-old who just graduated from Stelly’s Secondary School, left his home on June 26. Four provinces and 5,000 kilo- meters later, he arrived in Ajax on July 26. “I enjoy biking, and I wanted to 11th year for Terry Fox Run It’s expected at least 120,000 British Columbians will be partic- ipating in the Terry Fox Run, which takes place Sunday at points throughout the province. - Run organizers have set a goal of $850,000) for the event, the 11th annual fundraiser for cancer research. Funds from the run represent between 15 and 20 per cent of all funds raised for cancer research in Canada. Participation can mean collect- ing pledges and completing a course by running, walking, jog- ging, or cycling or by sending in a donation. “As this year marks the begin- ning of a second decade for the Tun, we know many people will be remembering Terry and his accomplishments and we hope this will encourage more people to get involved than ever before,”” provin- cial director Darrell Fox said in a news release. A Victoria run will be held at Centennial Stadium at UVic beginning at 10 a.m. There will be two routes, one three kilometers and another 10-K route. Pledge forms are available at the university centre building or vari- ous locales throughout Victoria. People can also donate at the run site. He visited an aunt and uncle, two cousins and his grandmother in Ajax until returning home Sept. 1. For this. trip, he took a plane. Fisher began his preparations months ago, riding every day he was able for the last year, lifting weights in a gym and running for endurance. “T had to run for endurance,” he said. Endurance was the key, and Strength in my legs.” He estimated he spent just over $2,000 on the excursion. TERRY FOX . Canada. He lost a leg to cancer, and used an artificial leg on his ight side. Meanwhile, as many as 2,000 B.C. Hydro employees, family members and retirees are expected to take part in relays across the province Friday to Sunday as part of the run. They will cycle, run and walk in the relays, which promote aware- ness and participation in the event. Relays are planned for a number of regions. On the Island, the relay begins at Campbell River at 7 a.m. on Friday, and concludes Saturday night at the B.C. Hydro office. His route followed the Coqui- halla Highway and the Trans- Canada Highway to Sudbury, then south on Ontario roadways to Ajax. “B.C. was just incredible through all the mountains,” he said. The flat, featureless Prairie provinces, on the other hand, were “boring,” he said. Next on the cycling agenda might be a trip along the Oregon coast. First, though, he plans to attend Camosun College to study criminal justice. Tod Inlet area remains rural The Tod Inlet area of Central Saanich will maintain its rural designation until more planning is done and a report is completed, according to an official communi- ty plan bylaw amendment approved by Central Saanich council recently. Against the votes of Ald. Jack Mar and Ald. Gary Valiquette, council approved the addition of the phrase: “Current zoning and densities will be maintained in the Mt. Newton rural area. “Because council is considering a proposal for the Tod Creek/Inlet area, that area will maintain its tural designation until such time as specific land use policies have been developed in the Brentwood Bay local area plan and the Capital Regional District comprehensive environmental assessment of Tod Inlet is completed.” : Valiquette objected to the amendment, saying that it could leave the impression that council is giving special consideration to the Tod Inlet area. He also said the current OCP designates the area as urban. “There is probably 50 (develop- ment) proposals that are sitting on hold for three years now and we’re going out of our way to say we're considering this,” Valiquette said. Ald. Clarence Bolt said the intent is that the designation will be maintained until specific poli- cies are developed.
