Seniors are the likely target of the impostors, say Sidney RCMP and Stephen Roberts, general man- ager of Dri-Way Carpet Cleaners. “There’s a lot of people being taken advantage of,” said Roberts. “(The men) aren’t in the carpet cleaning business. They’re in the business of taking as much money as they can, and they prey on senior citizens.” He said three men using a Square white van have been in Sidney, as well as Saanich and Victoria, saying they work for Dri- Way. The men are not bonafide clean- ers and they are not Dri-Way employees, he said. They often badger elderly people into getting their carpets cleaned. Often, they make the residents leave. When this happens, they bill the person without doing any work. The carpet is dry, a sign nothing was done, said Roberts. One Sidney couple is out $956 because of the scheme, while two others have lost about $450 each, said Roberts. He suggests people first get a Wiitten estimate for work pro- posed. Never have work done on the spot. He also suggests a check of the company, through references and the Better Business Bureau and a call directly to the company which the cleaners purport to represent. He said cleaners can be checked for certification cards, and mem- bership in carpet cleaning associa- tions. Sidney RCMP are warning resi- dents “to be consumer conscious regarding shady business opera- , tions.” Police said they are usually unable to intervene because in most cases the victim has agreed to the work. Extension ignored as permit passed Possible plans by the Ministry of Highways to extend John Road were ignored by North Saanich council Sept. 16 as aldermen gave unanimous approval to a develop- ment permit allowing a low- income family housing project on the site. Council had received a letter from Highways advising against allowing the project since the pro- posed John Road extension will cut across the property. However Mayor Maurice Cha- zottes said North Saanich received a legal opinion advising the municipality there were no grounds to turn down the develop- ment permit since the property is already zoned for multiple-family housing. If the province decides to build a John Road extension through the property after the housing is con- structed, Chazottes said the Minis- try of Highways will then have to deal with expropriation and any “public objections which may be raised. He suggested it is more logical to extend John Road to link with Resthaven Drive, avoiding the McDonald Road property. HOUSING Continued from Page Al inexperienced council gave its ear- lier approval “without background information.” Later in the meeting, council received a letter from the Wake- field Society, which is seeking approval to build a 24-unit low- income project which also Tequires a Sidney sewer hook-up. The society wanted council to reconsider its committee decision against the North Saanich terms. However, on a tie vote, council turned down a motion to recon- sider, with Daly, Calder and Rosko in favor and Amos, Goulet and Harfield opposed. Instead, alder- men voted to refer it to a North Saanich liaison committee. “To me that’s just whitewashing the issue,” said Daly, adding it may not be heard from again. But Goulet and Amos said only dialogue between the municipalit- ies will keep the project alive. Monday night North Saanich council members voted to delay consideration of development per- mits for both housing projects until after Sidney had made a decision on the sewer connection. every Anniversary 0% ; ys a Celebration. e Horget-Me-Nat y bg 652-9149 F ‘ #5-7816 E.
