News The Review - Wednesday, December 4, 1991 — A38 Submit entries this week for forage competition Farmers on the Saanich Penin- sula wanting to enter the forage competition being held in con- junction with the Dairy Producers’ Short Course, Feb. 6-7 in Matsqui, should submit samples to their local Ministry of Agriculture, office between Nov. 25 and Dec. 6. Ministry field crops specialist Don Bates said that there should once again be a good response to the competition. “Over the past four years, we have averaged 175 entries each year,” Bates said. “We expect a similar number this year since conditions for forage growth and harvest were generally very good.” Samples may be entered in three classes — hay (locally-grown only), corn silage and grass silage. Only one entry per class per farm is allowed. In the case of silage, samples that contain physical additives such as alfalfa cubes, beet pulp or rolled barley will not be accepted. Samples of silage treated with a preservative, however, may be entered. Judging is on the basis of feed analysis and visual characteristics. Farmers will be sent a report of the feed analysis results of their sam- ple or samples. Trophies will be presented to winners in each class during the short course. Top entries will be displayed, along with the feed analysis results and the production practices used to grow the crop. The aim of the competition is to create an awareness among far- mers of the quality that can be attained in home-grown forage and to spark an interest among all producers in improving forage quality. Samples must consist of two parts in order to allow one part to be used for feed analysis while retaining the other for visual judg- ing. A hay sample, therefore, will consist of two separate packages, each containing two four-inch flakes. A silage sample will consist of two bags, each containing five pounds. Plastic bags are the most convenient containers for silage. Hay may be packed in large plastic bags or cardboard boxes. All packages must be labelled with the farmer’s name, mailing address, telephone number and the . name of the class. Samples can be delivered to local Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food offices at Building 20, 8801 E. Saanich Rd., Sidney. Silage samples should be brought in as soon as possible after they are taken out of the silo. 1991.
