News Thee en: Wednesday Apa 1997 anal 656-1151 Lands End tunnel gone despite protests from Curfeis Point residents A tunnel from Tryon Road to Lands End Road under the Pat Bay Highway is no longer being built. Instead, traffic from Tryon Road and Curteis Point will move north to a new “‘Kittiwake Connector” and use a bridge to move west on Lands End or south on the highway — once construction of the Lands End interchange is completed. Despite pleas to council col- leagues, Ald. Dee Bailin was unsuccessful in getting council support for consideration of an eleventh-hour alternative plan by. Curteis Point residents for a con- necting road at the Lands End-Pat Bay Highway interchange. , We have certainly dealt with Pihis issue repeatedly but the mpacts will be felt for 50 years,” ailin said. “We cannot allow a ision of this magnitude to be en at this moment.” he confronted council mem- bers, asking who has walked the site and urging the mayor to take the time to “make a much more valid decision.” Council March 16 was consider- ing two alternatives to replace an approved design to construct a tunnel under the highway to carry traffic from the east side of the highway (Iryon Road and Curteis Point) to Lands End and the inter- change. Alternative B was supported by council, despite Bailin’s objedc- tions. It was produced by the ministry and calls for construction of the Kittiwake Connector, link- ing a new bridge to Curteis Road. Mayor Maurice Chazottes said he cannot discount the statments made by project engineer Joe Camilleri in his report. The report said altematuve B will not result in more noise, it removes the same amount of trees as the proposed tunnel but results in less visual impact and would eliminate the need for an underpass. Camiler discounted the Curteis Poiunt plan because it will impact on B.C. Ferries’ terminal expan- sion and a private home, may result in CRP truck traffic using the bridge, would require improve- ments on Swartz Bay Road and wil require an unacceptable grade. “This altemative impacts’ sev- erely on Curteis Point and is deficient on several aspects of safety and operation,” Camilleri said. Curteis Point Community Asso- ciation members Ruth Jacox, George Grover and Gordon Hill rejected the Alterantive B (later Wednesday April 1 6:00 pm WOMEN UNLIMIT- ED - Lifestyles.@) Host Pat Ni- chol profiles Victoria's interesting women as they share their views on careers and lifestyles. 6:30 pm APERTURE - Pho- tography.(t) Join host Bradford Stephenson in this instructional series on the art and science of 35mm photography.
