- Community A school-based business, Wood Works, is building success at Lau Welnew Tribal School in Bren- twood. Devised by teacher Peter Brand, a former carpenter, the program produces small wooden craft kits, each containing pre-cut wood pieces to produce either a boat, a plane mobile, a car or a train. Each kit includes sandpaper, nails and instructions and retails for $3. Brand notes the materials in each kit can be assembled with ordinary white glue. “If the child is really keen to bang a few nails, the nails are included but they'll need a l‘:ammer,” he added. - Although the instructions sug- gest one way to assemble the pieces, Brand says children often discover new ways to put the pieces together. From the boat kit, he notes, his own students have created four different crafts, ranging from a fish boat to a sailing yacht. “With the same kit, the child can make a variety of different toys,” he said. Working from the small wood- work shop beside the school, stu- dents prepare the 24 different wood pieces required for the four kits, using wooden guides designed by Brand. Brand notes the school offers carpentry lessons twice-a-weck to students in grades four to eight. Other students assemble the pieces into packages. Since the project began in January, Brand said the students have produced 500 kits. The most recent order, for 200 kits, was received Friday from Young Athlete Saskatchewan, which will use the toys for an upcoming promotion. Other orders have come from local schools and daycare centres, youth groups and from a school in Bella Coola. Each of the students who work for the company keeps a timesheet and is paid, he added. He hopes the school-based busi- ness will give older students incentive to stay in school instead of dropping out to take a part-time WHEELS UPON WHEELS are sliced from pieces of doweling for Wood Works craft kifs by LauWelnew Tribal School student Joseph Harry, 15. Using a computer desktop pub- lishing program, students at the school produced all of the required forms for the business, including instruction sheets, order forms and publicity, Brand said. Pena Elliot, Mike Home, Billy Horne and Joseph Harry are among the students who have produced forms for the business. Brand estimates 20 to 30 stu- dents have contributed to Wood Works, either by producing pieces, forms or packaging, like Stephanie Thomas, Bruce Morris and Louise Harry. The students also produce bird- houses and bead looms. Brand notes the wood used by the stu- dents is recycled from off-cuts produced by a furniture factory and recycled paper is used for the kit labels. Next week, Brand plans to take the kits to the three-day Focus *92 education conference in Victoria. french fries and a tossed salad. RESTAURANT K - LEGENDARY COUNTRY DINING ) Luncheon Tues. - Fri.
