Tax brief PETER SMITH photo Canadian Chamber sets federal agenda Acting on the advice of its members, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce has taken the lead in setting the federal government’s tax agenda for the next five years. The Canadian economy must become more competitive both domestically and internationally in the 1990’s. This requires significant changes to current taxation policy and the way it is administered. This was the hard hitting mes- sage contained in a detailed 47- page brief to key officials in the Departments of Finance and Reve- nue last month. It was followed up with an indepth half-day session with 20 of the top tax experts from the two government departments. At the session, specialists from the Chamber’s Taxation Commit- tee, led by Wayne Matheson, broke into workshops with the govern- ment’s tax experts to debate taxa- tion issues from a business per- spective. Workshop topics included: busi- ness and property income, corpor- ate tax, the goods and services tax, personal income tax and research and development. It was made clear to the govern- ment’s professional advisors that the Chamber is not seeking quick fixes, but is instead, proposing long-term solutions that will require substantive cooperation between the federal government, the provincial governments and the business community. It was emphasized that the Chamber will continue to keep close tabs on events and monitor the speed with which the Ministers of Finance and National Revenue react to these critical issues which the Chamber has put squarely on their agenda. Copies of the Canadian Cham- ber’s complete taxation brief are available from CCH Canadian at a nominal price by calling its toll- free line at 1-800-268-4522. TheReview Wednesday, April8,1992 — 6& Opportunity knocks when MP calls with research project OK @ The Saanich Peninsula Cham- ber of Commerce received good news recently when a call came from our Member of Parliament in Ottawa, Lynn Hunter (NDP), advising that our application for an Economic Development Research Project had been approved. The project falls within the Can- adian Job Strategy, and utilizes the skills of unemployed persons, pro-. viding a significant role for their talents. The purpose of the program will be to: Research, implement, docu- ment and compile a Business Inventory of the Saanich Peninsula and; Develop, collect and docu- ment data relating to a Community and Economic Profile for the Saa- nich Peninsula. Project staff (a coordinator, three researchers and an adminis- trative assistant), will work from the new Chamber office located at 9768-Third St. in Sidney. Staff will, on a one-to-one basis, contact all businesses in the com- munity to gain responses to the information survey(s) which will be designed within the project. The data will be compiled into an appropriate format which will be of assistance to prospective or existing businesses. By the use of this information, it is anticipated that new business and expanded business will be attracted to the area and given appropriate information for busi- ness decision-making and job creation. The wide exposure project par- ticipants will receive in the busi- ness community will enable con- tacts for future employment. The data collected will be the i precursor to an Economic Devel- By opment Profile on the Saanich fe Peninsula. If the skill level of the § project participants allows, the ® synthesizing of data for the Eco-§ nomic Development Profile may & also be within the project scope. The Chamber of Commerce involvement in this program will result in a win-win-win situation for the Chamber, the project par- ticipants and the community in § general. Off the top is an injection of § over $80,000 in project funds | which will be circulated into the local economy. The end result, which will be the completed data and its analysis, will remain for future use and application, and form the basis for further develop- mental work which the Chamber and the business community will utilize. Project participants will utilize their considerable skills while making contacts which will be invaluable in securing longterm employment. And the Chamber of Commerce, now located in “downtown Sidney” as a result of needing more space for the project participants, can make its Business Information Centre and other ser- vices more accessible for all.
