News The Review - Wednesday, April 8, 1992 — A3l Cancer Society promotes healthier lifestyle As the month of April gets into full’ swing, so does the Canadian Cancer Society with their annual fundraising campaign. However, this year’s effort is different than in the past as the society is promoting and assisting people in adopting healthier lifes- tyles through a variety of com- munity interactive programs. Saanich Peninsula unit chair- man Bill Draper said the society is initiating a number of concepts to help people have a better unde- rstanding of how important a healthy lifestyle is. “We want people to realize that developing a healthy lifestyle is very important because we know that a good portion of cancer is a result of how we live.” Recently, the Saanich Peninsula "unit has been actively promoting health and wellness by setting up displays in the Peninsula secon- dary schools. “We are primarily focussing on the school kids,” said Draper. Another program the unit has started is a clinic which will teach women how to properly conduct a breast self-examination. The clinic is operated at the Saanich Penin- sula hospital and runs the first Tuesday of every month from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is by appointment only and times can be arranged through the Saanich Peninsula cancer unit at 655-1311, between 12 noon and 2 p.m. which starts May 12, by calling 656- 1188.(12) PUSHING PUMPKINS Purchase your Giant Pumpkin seeds now for the Saanich Fair Pumpkin Growing competition. Open Draper said there are numerous other volunteer activities the Saa- nich Peninsula unit participates in — from driving cancer patients to the cancer clinic in Victoria to offering support to women who have had breast cancer. “Most of the people involved have been through it (cancer treat- ment) themselves,” said Draper. “Tt helps to have comforting from somebody who has been through it themselves. They (volunteers) tell the patients it (mastectomy) is not so bad. There is nothing to be ashamed of.” Draper said the unit has more activities in the works and hopes the increased visibility of the can- cer society will raise a greater public awareness. “One in three people in Canada are going to be touched by can- cer,’ said Draper. And for this reason he wants people to know there is an organization that can offer support. from 11 am to 5 pm, admission is $2 per person, children under 16 are admitted free.
