Their 12th anniversay bash was a great success. Customers were lined up at the door to take advantage of his fine food offered at 12-year-old prices. And would you believe it — one of his hard working staff — Sabrina Temblett was celebrating her 22nd birthday that night serving tables! Says she enjoyed every minute of it. “It wasn’t a money maker, but I was glad to do it, ” said Bill. That’s the sort of town Sidney is. He plans another for next year and we just can’t wait for it! : * ke * ... congratulations are in order to grandparents Vern and Laurel Gordon, and their daughter Kathy who gave birth to a 7 Ib. 8 oz. baby girl at Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Feb. 21. Kathy is well known to customers at Cornish’s Book and Stationery, Sidney and we are happy to report that she, and baby Paige-Marie are doing well after recovering from what was a pretty tough birth. Kathy says it’s hard to stay away from the store — that she misses serving her customers — but loves being a mother. : ok x ... opened last month, Sears new Catalogue Order Centre in Beacon Plaza. Chamber President Paul Deeton was on hand to do the honors at the ribbon cutting ceremony. Customers can expect much improved service from the new computerized system which searches availability of merchandise across Canada in seconds. And, talking about across Canada — Sears customers now have the opportunity of something new, free air travel! Sears Club points can be converted into Air Miles and used towards free air travel. Drop in at their new location and their helpfull staff will be happy to explain this great new program. * KOK ... expansion is in the works for Muffet and Louisa, Cotton and Down, at 2385 Beacon Avenue. The changes should take about six weeks to complete and we hope to have more details soon. * * X ... Like me, you must have wondered what was going on when the grass disappeared from the centre lot at the Cedarwood Motel on Lochside. Owners Les and Debra Tait informed me that it was an up-grading of the landscaping. They are building a paved “neople area” with tables and barbeque facilities. It may take a year before completion but Les assured me, “ We’ll have it looking real good by the time it is finished.” * kX ... and finally, from the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, Victoria, they now have a weekly gardening TV show on Channel 11. The commit- tee has made room for 36, four- person teams. Individual entries will be accepted and teams will be put together for the day. Of course, we encourage mixed teams. We would like as many women as possible to enter the °92 tournament. Your committee would like to see our local businesses, service clubs, the municipalities and sports organizations to enter teams in our challenge events. There will be special awards and prizes set aside for all the chal- lenge categories. There will be a prize for every participant along with “hole in one contests” on the Par 3 holes and longest drive competitions for both men and women. One par 3 hole will feature a $10,000 prize for knocking the ball in the hole with one mighty swing. Our prize table will feature a great array of items from local merchants and the Porteous’ Golf Shop. This magic Chamber Day will be capped off by an Island-style MLA Tanner at April meeting The April meeting of the Saa- nich Peninsula Chamber of Com- merce will feature Liberal MLA Clive Tanner as the guest speaker. This will be one of Tanner’s first public speaking engagements since being elected and a strong turmout is expected. It is a dinner meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. for cocktails and 7 p.m. for dinner on April 23 at Colum- bo’s Restaurant in Saanichton. CLIVE TANNER College course for Sidney Camosun College has just announced that a condensed ver- sion of its very successful Retail Sales Training Program is to be held here in Sidney, starting April 21. It is to be located at the Van- couver Island Regional Library, Sidney/North Saanich branch, on Resthaven Drive. Topics will include sales techni- ques, handling complaints and objections, security and liability, communication, the customer and professional ethics. Unfortunately, this shorter course does not include in-store experience. There will be 10 sessions from April 21 to June 13, on Tuesday nights from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., at a cost of $136.
