believe!

Locals tell us that the bounteous
rainfall at the exactly right calen-
dar time has produced the best
season for wildflowers in 20 years.

Brilliant pink sand verbena
(actually an Abronia) draped its
exceptionally large, showy blos-
soms over the coral sand for miles.

In the spaces between clumps
rose enormous stands of dune
primrose with individual flowers
larger than tea cups while brown-
eyed primrose swayed gently atop
their slender stems.

In the near background, sky-
blue phacelia complemented the
exuberant yellows of miniature
rounded clouds of brittlebush.

Further back, an almost unbro-
ken carpet of golden sunflowers,
their tall stems rising above prim-

rose so concentrated as to conceal
the earth below.

Stalwart prickle poppy, satin-
white with centres of brilliant
gold; seas of yellow-orange pop-
pies; breath-taking pentstemmon,
rich rose against the shadows;
shimmering fairy dusters with the
sheen of silk; scarlet chuperosa,
the hummingbird plant attracting

Cigarette theft

About 100 cartons of cigarettes
were taken from the Save On Gas
station on Keating Crossroad and
Oldfield Road during a daylight
break-in, Central Saanich police
said.

Sometime between 1:30 p.m.
and 3 p.m. March 23 a door knob
to an upstairs office was twisted
off while employees were busy
with customers. The smokes were
valued at $4,800 and police are
investigating.

lion, desert hibiscus, desert gold,
desert lavender, desert five spot,
the magnificent desert lily (Hes-
perocalis undalatum) and tack-
stem, ghost flower, slender oco-
tillo, creosote bush, scalebud,
monkey flowers, coreopsis and
golden-eyed owl clover.

“Green-thumb burglars” are
back on the Peninsula, Central
Saanich police warn after an inci-
dent between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
March 27.

While a woman was in the yard
doing garden work a thief entered
her home in the 7600-block East
Saanich Road through an unlocked

door and took about $4,000 worth
of jewelry, deputy police Chief
George Lawson said. ~

Included in the items reported
stolen was a gold wedding band, a
topaz bracelet, a diamond bracelet,
a gold band and an undetermined
amount of cash.
