News Students gained first-hand insight fo employment Too often, students go through the school system questioning the usefulness of the education they have received. “Tl never need to know math in the real world,” they might say. Or, “What does chemistry have to do with getting a job?” AS a means of providing some answers and insight into the pro- fessional world, Parkland secon- dary school held a Careers Day for its students April 28. “Its a chance where students get real information from people in the field,” said Madeleine Mor- Tis, a parent coordinator for the event. The event was structured on a workshop basis, where speakers from nearly 100 career fields would tell the students what they needed to get into the industry and what the-career was like. Moris said students signed up to listen to speakers in the careers they were interested in and, hope- fully, were able to formulate a better idea of what they wanted to do in the future. “Tt works in sort of a positive/ negative way,” she said. “Some Students may have felt a little disappointed in what a certain N. Saanich mill rate up five per cent but overall tax increase almost nil The municipal tax rate in North Saanich is up five per cent, but because of a reduction in the school district’s rate of taxation, the overall tax rate for residents is only .58 per cent. Ald. Ross Imrie, chairman of the budget committee, said the most significant areas of extra expendi- tures were: police protection, with an increase of one officer for 1992 effective March 31; addition of one maintenance man (which will actually cut costs by a reduction in contract services); an increase of $43,700 in the road maintenance budget (council is about to receive a road maintenance study to deter- . mine where it will be spent); and reduction of the province’s reve- nue sharing grant. Total revenue is up over $100,000 from 1991, Immie said. “A five per cent increase on a low taxation base like-ours is not a=- lot of money,’? Imrie said. With a reduction of 1.7 per cent in the school tax collection, there is virtually no increase in taxes. However, because of the cancel- lation of the province’s supple- mentary homeowner's grant, the average North Saanich homeowner will actually pay 33.27 per cent more in bottom-line taxes. Using the $230,000 average assessed value, the homeowner will pay $1,339.56 this year, com- pared to $1,005.17 last year, after the basic homeowners’s grant cal- culation, including gross water taxes. The grant does not come automatically — homeowners must apply for it. All taxes except school district taxes collected by the municipality increased this year. Following are the percentage increases with the mill rate in brackets. The CRD requisition was increased 2.21 per cent (8687), hospital is up 1.67 per cent (42582) and the B.C. Assessment - _ Authority is-up 19.58 per cent (.1806). The school district reduc- tion is so significant in terms of dollars because its mill rate is 4.6263, down from 4.707 last year. The general municipal mill rate is set at 1.4529 for 1992, up from 1.3837 last year. @ Allsemi-transparent and solid hide stains - ye @ All marine enamels, deck coatings and — . porch and floor coatings. sae 656-2202 career was like and others had — their goals reaffirmed.’ Speakers came from the Univer- sity of Victoria, Camosun College, Institute of Ocean Sciences, B.C. Ferries, Armed Forces, Coastguard and the local business community, all of whom volunteered their time for the event. Dr. Martin Collis, professor of physical education at UVic and keynote speaker for the fair, summed up the need for higher learning by telling students that “In today’s world, paper qualifica- tions (degrees and diplomas) and Grade 12 education are going to be the minimum requirements for many jobs.” Collis said his years as a student were not all enjoyable, but he is grateful for the education now.
