News TheReview Wednesday, May 20,1992 — A9 rR ete ey oe te Home-schooling alternative works for some families For a majority of children, and their parents, going to school is accepted as an intrinsic part of growing up, allowing children to grow, develop their sense of self and make frends while getting an education. But for some parents who, for whatever reasons, want more per- sonal control over their children’s environment, home-schooling is an opfion that suits their philoso- phies and lifestyles. Speaking at a recent presenta- tion by the Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils of Saanich (COPACS) at Sidney School, par- ent Becky Shaw. explained why, home education was best for her son Michael. Shaw, herself a teacher, said she is not against teachers. However, she said media exploitation alters society’s perception of children, especially at middle school age, and she did not want her son to be subject to that. She also said that disruptions in class, caused by some unruly chil- dren, set a certain tone and tend to divert a teacher’s attention from others needing attention. Shaw’s son Michael tended to be a very intense worker but without a good concept of passing time. This, along with other learn- ing habits, convinced her he would be better studying at home by correspondence, learning at his own pace outside a school envi- ronment. Spending about six hours a day studying, Michael uses a computer extensively and completes assign- ments under Shaw’s supervision. Papers are submitted and graded under a correspondence program and the students progress is care- fully monitored. For another parent, mother of three Melody Weaver, her eldest son’s crying and unwillingness to go to school prompted her to home-school him in a step-by-step process that she believes will allow him to blossom in his own time. Weaver has also decided to school her other two children to a _ Grade 4 level, at which Stage she Photo Reprints Available. Sidney Centre 655-1122 maintains the children’s self- esteem and personal values are solid and they are ready to be integrated into the school system. For Beth Reimer, the decision to home-school her two children is based on her belief that the bond- ing of a mother and child is vital in instilling a solid spiritual and value base. She believes that it is not until a child is between 8- and 11-years-old that their physical, mental and emotional develop- ment is balanced. The children work at “project- onented study” for two-and-a-half hours each moming. Reimer defers to her husband as the leader of the home and he sets the moral tone while she teaches “what a mother should teach.” All three parents said the chil- dren’s social development was well catered for in outside activi- ties and that while there were days of intense frustration, the home- school option — supported by local schools, district administra- tion and the provincial corre- spondence program — was the right option for their children. Hank Stefaniak, Saanich School District superintendent, told COPACS he understands that the public school system cannot meet everyone’s specific needs and that the materials and support required for the “positive alternative” of home-schooling would be made readily available at the local school level. Reimer cited a book by Ray- mond Moore titled Better late than early as a good guide to home schooling. The next COPACS meeting is June 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Sansbury School.
