School starts on September 8
next year — but the closing date
for the 1992-93 school year is still
undecided.

The board is struggling with two
close ““book-ends” which tradi-
tionally bracket the school term —
Labour Day and the last Friday in
June.

For the 1992-93 term, Labour
Day falls on Sept. 7 and the last
Friday in June is June 25. Assum-
ing a two-week winter vacation
and a five-day spring break, there
are 189 school days between those
two dates.

The district must schedule the
required 187 instructional days
plus five non-instructional days
and one school-year-end adminis-
tration day. To schedule the 193
days, the district must either
reduce the winter break or spring
break, reduce the number of non-
instructional days or go outside the
traditional “book-ends” for the
term.

“We're trying to fit a reasonable
calendar into the calendar run by
the moon,” Trustee Ann Johnston
said.

In a letter to the board, Arlene
Antonik of Saanichton asked the
board to ensure six instructional
days are not “lost” in 1992-93.

She noted there were 195
instructional days in 1991-92, yet
a maximum of 189 instructional
days are proposed for next term.

She also feared the number of
non-instructional days would be
increased in the next contract

“Parents’ patience with these
D-Days has worn thin at best — an
increase in their number with a
decrease in the number of instruc-
tional days is simply intolerable,”
she wrote.

Trustees received the letter at
the May 4 board meeting. At the
same meeting, trustees decided
they could not make a decision on
the end of the term until the dates
for the Grade 12 final exams are
set by the province.

However they agreed the school
year would start on Sept. 8.

$1,300 bike stolen

An 18-speed mountain bike val-
ued at $1,300 was stolen from a
home on Patricia Place in Sidney
sometime Thursday afternoon,
Sidney RCMP said.
The bike is described to be a
men’s model, Murinoni brand and
is grey, red and silver in color.
Persons with information about
this theft are asked to call Sidney
RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
