Sports TheReview Wednesday, May 20,1992 — A24™ Old Time racer ready for season despite _tti by Randy Allen The Review Speeding in the streets is some- thing Dave Rogers prefers not to do. Instead, the 41-year-old North Saanich resident waits until he is on an-oval race track in his 1936 Pontiac coupe before putting the pedal to the floor. Rogers, a father of three daugh- ters, has been racing off and on for 20 years as a part-time hobby and says he does not apply his racing skills to everyday driving. “T take the caution a person uses when driving in the streets to the track and not the reverse,” he said. “T have more trust in the guys I race with than the drivers on the Pat Bay Highway.” His Pontiac, which is equiped with a six-cylinder, 250-cubic- inch, 315 horsepower G.M. truck motor, three-speed manual trans- mission and a Ford nine-inch rear end, is just one of 30 Old Time Race Cars registered on the Island. The sport of Old Time car racing is, he says, an inexpensive venture that does not take up much of his time. He races on weekends and only takes one week out of the year to compete in the United States. Rogers has been in a couple of accidents on the track and as a result has a lot of respect for safety and caution when behind the wheel. “We've all seen bad accidents,” Rogers said about the some of the wrecks he has witnessed on the track. “And, we’ve all seen people get hurt.” He said the Old Time race car drivers are more defensive and cautious than those on other racing circuits — drivers will brake if they think there is risk of a colli- sion. “We are always thinking, “If I hit him I might flip,’ ’ said Rogers. “Nobody takes unneccessary chances.” Last year; he fractured his shoul- der and cracked his sternum after flipping his car during a race in Washington. He said the accident ‘| have more trust in the guys | race with than the drivers on the Pat Bay Highway’ Van Den Bulk shines in middle disiance In addition to his record- breaking runs in the 100-m and 200-m sprints, Adam Street helped Parkland School to the 4 X 100-m relay title. The four-person team won with a time of 46.4 seconds during the Lower Island Junior High Championships at UVic’s Centennial Stadium Thursday and Friday. In the girl’s bantam division, it was Jeannette Van Den Bulk’s tum to do the double, taking the 400-m title in 59.2 and the 800-m in 2269) In the bantam boy’s section, Parkland was outdone by Stelly’s who had Jamie Main win the 100-m hurdles in 15.1 seconds. He also helped his team take both the 4 X 100-m and 4 X 400-m relays in times of 48.2 and 3:50.7 respec- tively. Stelly’s Mark Holloway won the 3,000-m title in 10:00.5 while Parkland’s Darryl Stensaker took the coveted 1,500-m title in a ime of 4:41.6. In the midget boy’s category, Ben Nelson of North Saanich Middle School won gold in the shot putt with a throw of 13.20. Flips are a definite risk with the Old Time cars. They have open wheels and, if two cars touch, the tires usually drive over one- another with one car ending up flipping end over end. 3 This fact has not daunted him yet, but Rogers says his wife Trisha has not been to the track since he flipped a couple of years ago at Wester Speedway. “She’ll watch me race on video but she won’t go out to the track,” he said with a chuckle. Rogers plans to take his Pontiac to an American competition in Roseburg, Oregon May 30 for its 1992 debut. Later this year, other weekend trips are planned in Washington state, Montana and Idaho. “Both the car and driver have recovered from the accident and will represent the Peninsula in these major races,” Rogers said.
