= Y Gardening | TheReview Wednesday, May 20, 1992 — A27 The soil is finally warm enough fo plant your petunias Lots of phone calls this week, most of them from folks anxious about planting times. Is it too early to put in petunias? No, Beth, it is not. The weather should really be settled enough for most things, although I would still hold off for at least another week before putting in squash, cucum- bers, tuberous begonias and impa- | tiens. I took the soil’s temperature again today and the thermometer read just over 50) degrees. Corn, beans, cucumbers and ! squash thrive at a soil reading of 60 degrees; anything less is regarded as risky. Nevertheless, I am going to plant the com tomorrow, as it is outgrowing the styrafoam cups in which I planted each seed. I think I'll hold off on the pole | beans for a few days yet, although | I'm sure they, too, would be just | delighted to get out of those dinky | cups and into the open ground! | - Mary Kimber brought me a tray | containing six lovely small helio- | trope plants. I had wonderful heli- | otrope last year but, in spite of the L mild winter, it didn’t survive, so I really was thrilled with Mary’s kind offering. It will be added to various pots on the deck where its color and perfume will be a delight. I’m going to have to buy some of the plants necessary 1o make up really handsome containers. I just didn’t grow enough stuff! We have godetia, ivies, salipg- lossis, lavatera, lobelia, snapdra- gons, zinnias, and of course, lots of geraniums, a few setcreasea, a few dwarf cosmos, and some nolana, but no petunias, marigolds, neme- Sia, Impatiens, mimulus, thunber- gia, ageratum, or ... or ... there must be at least another dozen flowers that would add something beautiful to a planter ‘Use shingles, sacking, newspapers, long grass, branches, anything at all that will - protect them from that searing heat’ It’s fun to put a few unusual - plants into baskets, either hanging ones or those flat on the ground. One thing I like to add to all planter pots is a few alyssum seeds, (for alyssum’s heavenly perfume) and a few nasturtium seeds to provide color later on in the season. Isobel Felton reports something most unusual; four tiny, perfect, Marigold flowers blooming in the centre of a marigold seed-head. Thave seen squash seeds sprout- ing inside a parent squash, but flowering? Never! Weird and won- @ derful things seem to happen in gardens, don’t they? This is proba- bly something for the Guinness Book of Records, Mrs.E! Just a few words on planting tomatoes. Do put in your stakes at the time you plant tomatoes, water plants well, and then, using clothes-pegs, fasten sheets of newspaper on the south side of tomato cages, to keep the sun from wilting your newly-planted trea sures. You should cover all transplants (not just tomatoes) with something to provide shade for their first few days in the ground. Use shingles, sacking, newspapers, long grass, branches, anything at all that will protect them from that searing heat. A watering with 15-30-15 (Mir- acle-Grow) or 10-52-17 (now 10- 51-16, and don’t ask me WHY!) will help prevent shock, and encourage new root growth. After a pleasant chat with Dr Munholland about propogating tuberous begonias, a column on this subject would seem a good idea, so next week, with any luck Friday, May 22 FREE AEROBIC WORKOUTS 10:10am Moving On Up 12:15pm Step Up* Sneaker Patrol To kick off Fitweek on the nght foot we ask you, out in'the community, to wear your sneak- ers for the day. Binding arbitration is the only fair way to settle the current dispute between the NDP government and the doctors of British Columbia. The doctors are prepared to accept binding arbitration. The Canada Health Act requires it, and even the NDP government in Ontario sup- ports it. More important, in a recent poll, 87% of British Columbians favoured binding arbitration as the way to settle the current dispute. But the NDP government is reluctant to settle this dispute in a fair and impartial manner through independent binding arbitration. Let’s solve this dispute now. BRITISH COLUMBIA af.
