— Hews Extra work outside school hours on an engineering project under the Issues in Science program has proved to be “money in the bank” for a young Stelly’s student who took a silver medal and $1,350 at the Canada Wide Science Fair. Thias Borstad, 16, from Deep Cove and a Grade 11 student at Stelly’s took the prize in the senior engineering category for his work- ing model of a wind-powered gen- erator. In Apmil, he won at the regional science fair in Victoria and quali- fied for the nationwide competi- tion in Sudbury, Ont. The national event featured more than 400 stu- dents and 300 projects were judged. Completed as a personal project as part of the Issues in Science initiative — piloted locally in Stelly’s Secondary School — the project incorporated elements of previous projects by Borstad and his keen interest in sailing, and therefore, in aerodynamics. Borstad started research work on the wind generator around Christ- SSSSson mas and by Spring Break was in a position to build his working mod- el. Since its construction over the break from school, he has spent at least some time almost every day testing the efficiency of different blades and measuring the electri- -cal output with volt- and amp- meters. Giving regular progress reports to teacher and coordinator Megan Moore, Borstad and his classmates worked away at home with techni- cal and material support provided TheReview by the school. Borstad’s device, measuring seven feet in diameter, also fea- tures a computer controlled vana- tion of the pitch of propeller blades according to wind speed. It is, he says, “very close to being as-good as it can get” at the cost and the advantage of the small improvements that could be made would be more than offset by increased costs. For the moment, Borstad is not sure if he will continue his involvement in the innovative Wednesday, May 27, 1992 " Silver medal for Stelly’s student at Canada-wide event A23 Issues in Science program because, in Grade 12, he will have graduation and university on his mind. Having seen the presentations at the science fair, he was struck by the quality of many of them. He felt he had a good chance of taking something but was still surprised and pleased with his silver medal. With the $1,350 prize-money tucked away in the bank towards university, he intends to do some- thing “in the sciences, for sure, and maybe engineering,” TRY A DELIGHT! our Or CHICKEN DELIGHT CHICKEN BREAST BURGER BASKET Includes: Wedgies *Fabulous Salad Bar *Famous Rotisserie Chicken *Take Out Service | Fe TUCKER: DOMUOOOOOOoO S 9810 - 7ih St., Mariner Village Mall SIDNEY, B.C. *Steaks *Burgers Open for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner 7 am. - 10 p.m. 7 Days a Week 0 *., FULLY LICENSED PREMISES » MAJOR CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED Mwthe fore & art | ore *Ribs PAP, H, OF GO HOO, 9,0 ALAL7 Dining Guide This Week’s Dining Spot 02 VE \ ) HOME OF THE? o> HOME OF THE “WEDGIE FRIES” 9816 4th Street, Sidney 656- 5331 *with this coupon Liquor excluded =a “WEDGIE FRIES” 6 i = e 9816 4th Street,Sidney 656-5331 Poses Spat cees iets aL SS} 0 le.
