Several Vancouver Island Select 4-H Beef Club and Saanich Penin- sula 4-H Beef Club members were among the winners in the beef show. Vancouver Island Select Beef Club winners in beef cattle classes included Chris Wilson, who won the senior showmanship category and Debbie Samaroo, who won the “reserve showmanship division. An outstanding 83 on the third day and a three-day total: of 264 assured Jacklin the ladies’ division excellent defence and passing of ‘Lara McCullough (nee Melville) and Chan’s tough serving, they built up a 9-4 lead. But again, the Bright team came from behind to post an 11-9 vic- tory to take the match. The loss left the Parkland grads with a second-place award. Meanwhile, Justin Gayler, Tim Spray and Wendy Simms lost an 11-8, 11-6 quarter-final match to UVic trio Steve Sran, Fiona Moffat and Mike Allan, who finished third overall in the tournament. 4-H projects take showmanship awards with second place in the Holstein Interclub category. In sheep and lamb classes, the Saanich 4-H Lamb club won first place in the herdsmanship cate- gory. And Kelly Jack won the reserve title for showmanship in the sheep and lamb competition. The club also ranked top ten in the miscellaneous theme of the fair category. TOP STEER SOLD FOR $1.75 POUND Vancouver Island 4-H club member Adrian Gipbon’s sicer project was among the lighter animals at 1,040 lbs. but it fetched a high price. It was auctioned to Kohler’s European Sausages for $1.75 per pound. Chris Wilson’s 1,104-lb. steer sold to J and L Meats Co. Ltd for $1.26 per pound. Debbie Samaroo was paid $1.50 per pound by J and L Meats Co. Ltd. for her 1,234-Ib. steer project. And Theresa Harris received $1.22 per pound from Grandmai- son Beef Farm Ltd. for her 1,254- Ib. steer. Saanich Peninsula 4-H Beef Club members also sold some steer projects. Jessica Adams sold her 1,130-Ib. steer to Pitt Meadows Meat for $1.48 per pound and Sandi Cavan- agh’s .1,070-lb. steer project brought $1.25 per pound from Pitt Meadows. Steve Thomas received $1.37 per pound from Johnston Packers for his 1,159-Ib. steer, and Mark Verhagen got $1.27 per pound from Johnston for his 1,089-Ib. steer. Sold to Pine Ridge Livestock Ltd. for $1.42 per pound was Clayton Arnold’s 1,090-Ib. steer.
