Community Sidney ripe for concern series Sidney is ready for professional concerts, say organizers of the Sidney and North Saanich Com- munity Arts Council sponsored Sidney Concert Series. The series will bring profes- sional musicians from throughout the south Island into the commun- ity at a rock-bottom price. Season tickets for the four con- cert series are just $20 and include a reception which will follow each show. The first concert, at 8 p.m. Oct. 16 in St. Paul’s United Church, will include the premiere of a work by local composer Stephen Brown. Entitled Black-eyed Susan, the work is based on a single line of melody from an old fiddle tune. A 19th Century manuscript record- ing the 20-second snippet of music was recently discovered in Ontario, Brown said. He expanded the basic melody into a six minute composition. “I thought it would be appropri- ate to give the music a rebirth,” Brown said. Brown is the artistic director for the concert series. He and Ann Cullen, a director of the Sidney and North Saanich Community Arts Council, agree the initial response to the concert series has been encouraging. By the end of September, one- third of the available series tickets had been sold. By the time the series starts, they hope two-thirds of the subscriptions will be sold. “If people are interested in clas- sical music, the series features professional quality musicians performing locally at an extremely reasonable price,” Brown said. The 14-member St. Cecilia Players will perform the first con- cert, which will include work by Handel, Bach and Vivaldi. Featured performers include Susan de Burgh, who has per- formed for the CBC and is with the Victoria Conservatory; Sidney musician and instrument builder Gregory Brown and Austin Scott, a teacher for many years who was also a member of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra. The second concert will be held Dec. 18 at Parkland Secondary and will feature the 65-member. Vic- toria Civic Orchestra under the direction of Robert Cooper. The series returns to St. Paul’s Church for the third concert by the Sidney By-The-Sea Quartet and the Academy Flute Choir, Directed by Austin Scott, the concert will include works by Dvorak, Brown and Messiaen, plus a composition by Scott. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto Four and Mozart’s Piano Concerto 14 in E Major are among the works in the fourth concert, per- formed by Susan Munson and Susan de Burgh on April 16. “This a new idea for Sidney,” said Cullen, adding that the Arts Council contributed $1,000 in seed money to the project. The organizers suspect there is'a great deal of interest in classical - music in the community, The occasional single concerts have been well-supported and many local music lovers drive into Victoria for performances. “A lot of people will drive into Victoria but they don’t like to,” Cullen remarked. “I think Sidney is ready for this.” Free flu shots now available Seniors, residents of nursing homes and other care facilities and adults or children suffering from chronic diseases can receive free influenza yaccinations from Capi- tal Regional District health. Arlene Davidsen WE’RE MATCHMAKERS Sometimes a good Realtor will remind you of that- favorite aunt many of us have who is always trying to: fix up single nieces or nephews with the single sons and daughters of her friends, especially when one of her blind dates results in a great marriage. We match prospective buyers with the sellers who have the perfect home for their family, and when it really works, we feel terrific. Even more important, our buyers and sellers feel terrific. More often than not, sellers have a string attachment to their home and the memories it holds. It’s important for them to know that the new buyers will love it like they do. While any sale can become complicated, and we can face difficulties on the road to completion, if we’ve started out on a positive note, problems seem to work themselves out more easily. This is one important reason why we work hard to maintain a good rapport between the parties to our sales trasactions. If there’s a move in your future, talk to us Tim or Arlene at 652-5171.
