Exterior latex paint is the marvel of manufacturer’s new technology

Today's consumers have high expec-
tations of nearly everything they buy —
from home electronics to simple house-
hold goods. But some of the greatest
demands are put on house paint.

Top quality acrylic latex paint is a
good example. We expect it to:

° Be ready for application with just a
quick stir, even after silting in a.can
for a long period;

Be capable of being applied by,
brush, roller or spray-gun in a wide
range of weather conditions;

of colors, and in different sheen
and gloss levels;

That’s a lot to ask from a product
that typically costs just $20-$25 per
gallon, yet top quality paints do pro-
vide this type of performance. How?
Through the sophisticated technology
that is engineered into today’s high-
grade latex paints.

A major part of that technology ts
found in the latex binder in these
paints, according to the Rohm and
Haas Paint Quality Institute.

It is the paint’s binder that forms a
film with the pigment particles, and
provides adhesion to the surface below.
The composition and amount of binder
helps determine many of the paint’s
performance characteristics, including
its toughness, adhesion, color retention
and overall durability.

As a quality latex paint dries, the
water evaporates and tlie acrylic binder
particles fuse together. The result is a
very tough, continuous film that binds
the pigment particles into a top-per-
forming coating.

The toughness of top quality latex
paint is also due to a special chemistry
— known as wet adhesion — that
causes the binder particles to remain
attached to the surface, even when the
paint is subjected to rain, dew or
washing. Were it not for wet adhesion,
the paint would be much more prone
to blistering, cracking and peeling.

Other advances in paint chemistry
include brighter and more color-fast
pigments: special additives that improve
the paints’ application properties and
uniformity of appearance; and additives
to help prevent mildew growth.
