The spookiest jack-o-lantems
for Halloween have been grown
and are waiting to be picked up in
two special events this Saturday.

Pumpkin lovers will be able to
have their choice of potential jack-
o-lanterns while supporting either
the Sidney Lions or the Save the
Children Fund, Sidney branch.

Sidney Lions present Pumpkin
Mania from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at
Beacon Plaza. A mountain of
pumpkins will be available.

_In exchange for a small dona-
tion, children are invited to pick
out their favorite pumpkin and
carve a jack-o-lantern for Hallow-
een.

The Lions Lunch Box will be
serving the usual hamburger and
hot dogs. However, for the occa-
sion, the menu has been expanded

Pumpkin patches ripe for picking

to include pumpkin pie for dessert.

All proceeds will go to support
Lions service projects in the com-
munity.

Meanwhile, back at the pump-
kin patch on Don Smyth’s Farm,
the Save the Children Fund will be
offering a chance to pick a pump-
kin right off the vine between
noon and4pm. —

The farm is at 966 Downey.

Road in Deep Cove, (the comer of

Downey and West Saanich Roads).

Lorraine Smyth estimated there
are about 200 pumpkins in the
field, ranging in size from six
inches in diameter to a diameter of
two feet or more.

“We've got some of the large
ones but there are only three
which are really, really large.”

She suggested families who
want to search the field for their
pumpkin wear boots.

A clown will be on hand to
entertain children and give advice
on pumpkin choices.

The pumpkins are being sold by
donation. Sales start Saturday and
will continue until Halloween.

Proceeds will go to the Save the
Children Fund, which supports
development projects in Third
World Countries.
