News Sidney wants police office open 24-hours Sidney council is asking the RCMP to evaluate the costs of manning the Sidney police station 24 hours a day. A motion by Coun. Bob Jones to examine the feasibility of extended police service hours developed as a Tesult of inquiries by concerned - residents. “1 feel that the local area has matured to the point to which we require a police station that is open and accessible 24 hours a day,” Jones told council at a meeting - Oct. 13. “When we phone the police, we should be talking to Sidney mem- bers, not Colwood. And in case of emergency we should be able to access the station immediately.” Jones cited the employment of round-the-clock local police ser- vices in other municipalities — N. Saanich gets Gulf View The District of North Saanich is taking over Gulf View Provincial Park, located on East Saanich Road below the Dean Park neigh- borhood. Originally built as a rest area for travelers from Victoria to Sidney, the “postage stamp-size”’ park is expected to be under municipal control once formal transfer papers are completed, administrator Ron O’Genski said. In other park news, Mayor Maurice Chazottes said Tuesday that negotiations are currently underway regarding transfer of John Dean Park to the municipali- However, it could be some time as the transfer is scheduled for completion by 1994. “Tf the province offers to move the date forward, we would consid- er it,’ Chazottes said. The Capital Regional District is honoring Chazottes request for tight of first refusal for North Saanich on John Dean, Chazottes said. “The big question is, “How _ - much will it cost to run?’ ~ Chazottes said. Meanwhile, work was underway at the Patricia Bay- waterfront as North Saanich public works crews moved rock and dirt to improve a section of the foreshore for walk- ing. The district recently received a foreshore lease from the Ministry of Crown Lands, Chazottes said. “Tt will be a very small park with a wheelchair access to a as Pat Bay park created lookout,”’ Chazottes said. “We’ve done tremendous work with improving the beach walk.” The plans for a boat ramp in Pat Bay are not far out of mind, however. “Tt’s not dead, but it’s on the far-distant backbumer,” Chazottes said. He cites a need for a boat ramp on the west side of the Peninsula and said it would also give council a response to requests from private landowners to build ramps and docks. : “The boat ramp is not ruled out. We have the park and it can be brought back to the people of North Saanich at anytime,’ Cha- zottes said, adding it will likely be two or three years before it does come back. And, in other park news, council Monday ratified a committee rec- ommendation to leave the Setchell Road access to the waterfront as it currently is. Council heard that is a formal beach access was created from the current road allowance, neighbor- ing property owners would have the ability to petition to take over parts of the formal road allowance. And, improvement proposals for Bazan Bay Park and Wain Park that were to be presented to the public Saturday at the municipal hall will now be presented to a council committee and the public simultaneously Nov. 9. The meeting at the municipal hall starts at 7:30 p.m. and is open to all who are interested.
