NEWS «nd VIEWS @ ! TheReview New Chamber committee chair for Commonwealth Games The Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is continuing with its initiative to help the Common- weath Games Society welcome visitors to the Greater Victoria region. “The Saanich Peninsula is the: only way to get to the Common-. wealth Games, either through the airport oir the ferry terminal,” the Chamber’s first vice-president Ron Kubek said. “We felt it is important for us to get involved.” Joan Beattie of the Panorama Leisure Centre is the new commit- tee chairman for the Common- wealth Games Committee. Beattie takes over from former chairman Don Trivett, who is moving on to work through the Sidney Celebration Society on Commonwealth Games related activities. Recently, Beattie and Trivett organized a group of workers to do the cooking for a group of about 3,000 Games volunteers at a func-’ tion hosted by the Commonwealth Games Society for its volunteers. The demand for hot dogs and burgers was heavy and the workers were kept busy cooking and serv- ing up to the last moment. There were a few “smoked out” Cham- ber members by day’s end. The Games Society sent an official letter to Beattie thanking her and the Chamber for its sup- port and reported that the event was a huge success. More Games-related activities are planned for the future. Upgrade planned for Pat Bay Infocenitre The Chamber is undertaking a major project to renovate and upgrade the Pat Bay Infocentre. Chamber manager Gary Mac- Pherson, Don Trivett, and Ron Gurney will be working as a committee to plan and implement the project. After asking for financial sup- port from the municipalities, and the provincial government and receiving nothing more than good wishes, it was decided that this project would have to be a “com- munity” project. It is planned to seek corporate and individual sponsorship through organized “‘work bees”’ and corporate donations of time and money. It is the plan of the Chamber to make Pat Bay into one of the finest infocentres on Vancouver Island, and at the same time create a revenue producer for the Chamber by making new space available for advertising sales, and through the sales of merchandise, maps, bro- chures etc. Support for the project has been gratifying to date and with the support indicated the renovations should be completed by year end. New telephone service to encourage tourism Tourism Minister Darlene Mar- zt has announced the signing of a “memorandum of understand- ing” with B.C. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has passed resolutions that urge the federal government to raise the Small Business Deduc- tion limit from $200,000 to 400,000. Due to inflation the real value of the Small Business Deduction is approximately half of what it was when instituted in 1981. Increasing this figure would counteract some of the tax changes that have adversely affected small business. The Chamber has also urged Ottawa to raise the eligible loan size under the Small Business Loans Act from $200,000 to $300,000. Doing so would attract more financial institutions to lend under the act.
