News Theo’s Place loses business In case of mistaken identity Educators at Sidney Elementary came Out this week in defense of Theo Macris, a Sidney restaurateur who is being mistaken for a Sidney businessman who was convicted last week of sexual assault against two teenage girls. “The public should be made fully aware that the owner of Theo’s Place, Theo Macris, is not the same individual as the other Sidney restaurateur of the same first name,” said a letter to the editor signed by 22 staff members at Sidney Elementary Monday. “Macnis has been an exemplary Sidney businessman and father. We have known the family well and wish that your readers and the community at large not be con- fused over the accused.” Macnis, contacted at home Tues- day, said he has received 50 to 60 telephone calls after stories appeared in the Victoria Times Colonist and The Province identi- fying the man as a Sidney restaur- ateur but not naming his business. The Review carried a story in last week’s edition which identi- fied the convicted man’s place of business. “Its a terrible thing,” Macris said emotionally. “I felt so bad the other day. “People call you, they don’t ask for an explanation, they just give dirty words and hang up the phone,” he said. His restaurant, Theo’s Place on Fifth Street, has suffered a serious decline in business and at least five people who booked Christmas parties or other functions have canceled. “T’m here 12 years in Sidney : and everyone knows me as Theo,” Macris said. “Very few people know him.” Meanwhile, regular patrons have called and offered words of encouragement, Macris said. But, explaining the problem to his children was difficult after they asked what all the fuss was about, Macris said. His daughters, age 16 and 14, anda son age 10, help out in the restaurant on- weekends. In many cases, Macris does not have the opportunity to tell callers that he is not the Theo in question. He said he approached the Times Colonist with a request for clarification last Wednesday. Convicted of two counts of sex- ual assault by Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Murphy in Victor- ia Oct. 27 was Theologus Joseph Gardener, 51, owner of Pelicanos Cafe and Bakery. Gardener will be sentenced Nov. 26. C.S. won't wait for road work Problems with trucks travelling. through residential neighborhoods is just one reason why Central Saanich wants the Ministry of Highways to complete promised work on the Pat Bay Highway. Municipal engineer Al Mackey told council Oct. 26 that he would try to clarify the status of the projects during an upcoming mee- ting with the Ministry of High- ways. Coun. Arlene Box asked Mac- key to convey council’s concem over the truck access to the munic- ipality. ““We have to get some solution,” she said. Council specifically directed staff to check on the closing of East Saanich Road at the Pat Bay highway which was originally to be completed by the end of December; on the extension of the acceleration lane southbound on the highway at Tanner Road, which was to be done by the end of December; and on the extension of the acceleration lane southbound on the highway at Island View Road, which was to be done by the end of October. “We were promised almost a year ago most of this upgrading would take place,” said Coun. Jack Mar, asking when the work would be done. “Tn the next fiscal year,’ Coun. Ian Cameron responded. * xk & Draft regulations for the desig- nation and registration of heritage buildings in Central Saanich were reviewed briefly at a council com- mittee meeting Oct. 26 before being sent back to municipal staff for revision. Council also asked staff to pro- vide samples of proposed renova- tion guidelines and application forms for heritage designation. Coun. Jan Cameron also asked if staff could calculate which of the potential heritage properties in Central Saanich could accommo- date a second building. His question related to a clause — adopted to preserve the Hagan House which allows a second dwelling on the same property as a heritage structure. $3.6 MILLION HALL Continued from Page Al Holmes also identified the ques- tion of locating funds to pay for an anticipated annual operating deficit of the facility. “We've looked at two alterna- tives to this question: Either through grants from the munici- palities or through income genera- tion from surplus land assets,” Holmes told council. Preliminary work on the project is quite comprehensive, Coun. John Calder said. “Having two high profile non- profit agencies working together for a common goal makes it easier for council to deal with a project of this caliber,” Calder said. The committee made a motion Monday to meet with North Saa- nich council to discuss the new community hall proposal.
