Sea Cadet Number 220 Adm. - Budge unit departed yesterday = with the crew from HMCS Saskat- * chewan, based at Esquimalt. “While on board he will be treated like a regular officer and be given duties to perform,” Saanich Peninsula unit president Don Coutts said last week. Sorsdahl, 17, is the cockswain, or senior cadet, at Adm. Budge, a student at Stelly’s Secondary in Central Saanich and a resident of Brentwood Bay. He is trained as an engineer and has operated the engine room on YAGs during navy cadet exercises in the past, Coutts said. “He’s been on an accelerated advancement program,’ Coutts said. The cadet corps was informed that four berths were available for the members of 29 cadet corps in the province. There are 10 sea cadet corps on Vancouver Island. Sorsdahl applied for the position and was selected to travel with the crew of the Saskatchewan from Nov. 10 to Dec. 11. Time at sea will not just be filled with regular navy duties however. Sorsdahl will also be expected to keep up with school work and will be reporting to a liaison officer with school assign- _ ments, Coutts said. Apparently, Sorsdahl has aspira- tions toward a career in the navy and has several relatives who have served in the Armed Forces. During cadet activities, Sorsdahl competes as a marksman on the corps’ shooting team and last year served as an engineering instructor at Cadet Camp Pat Bay.
