TheReview Wednesday, November 11,1992 — C3 The Cove Ail Points Automotive squad battled to a 2-1 win over the Sagres in Vancouver Island Soccer League Division 3 action, Sunday at Blue Heron Park. Cove opened the scoring two minutes into the first half when Pat Walsh deflected a corner kick from Mike Thompson past Sagres net- minder Jan Houghton. About 25 minutes into the match, a scuffle broke out after a Cove player retaliated to a reckless Sagres challenge, coach Drew Smyth said Monday. The disagreement resulted in @ two players, one from each side, being ejected from the game. The Sagres threatened to walk off the field in protest of the referees decision but play was eventually restored, Smyth said. Cove had a couple of chances to extend the lead later in the half, but the sending-off incident seemed to spur the Sagres on, Smyth said. _ “Tf it wasn’t for stern defending, the Sagres may have levelled the score.” In a second half plagued by hail and threatened by lightning, Cove § .. . where the Deer and the ES = = = rancher on a sunny acre. when you're serious about selling . - . Cove took an offensive game to the Sagres in the second and restored the lead after about 10 minutes of constant pressure. The Cove engine room, fuelled by Jim Knowles, finally found more room to operate in the mid- field. After a cross-field pass, Steve Hodges found space on the left side of the Sagres defence, came across the penalty box and laced an effort to the goalies right, Smyth said. The rebound fell to Wes Nelson who managed to bury the game- winning point into the netting. With the win, Cove claimed second place and moved to only five points behind the first place Pro Pats Legion. Cove will take on the Pro Pats next weekend at Blue Heron Park. Both sides are very defen- sive-minded and much of the play throughout the game happened in midfield,’ assistant coach John McDonald said Monday. Colour scored the only goal of the match just one minute before the half-time whistle.
