Studio survives second year Maintaining an art studio in commercial space despite a reces- sion is. an accomplishment worth celebrating, says Sidney artist Tine Andriessen Holmes. So she is celebrating with an open house this Saturday to mark the second anniversary of her First Street studio. The open house will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the studio, located between Squid Roe Res- taurant and The Review. The open house will include a display of some of Holmes’ work. As well as painting in her studio, Holmes also offers classes for adults and children. An Island resident for 19 years, she has taught art for many years, sometimes renting space in a hall and sometimes teaching evening courses at Camosun College. She has also tried to maintain a studio during those years, starting with space in the old Campbell Building in downtown Victoria until the building was tom down. Her next studio was in Disco- very School and then in the Duck Building on Broad Street in Vic- toria. After closing the Broad Street studio she worked from her home for six years before establishing her new studio in Sidney. C. To create the orginal waterco- lors, Warren drew on 14 years’ experience painting the birds. She also carefully chose the settings, studying the red current blooms visible from her Canoe Cove home and the Menzie’s Larkspur which bloomed in May. On a visit to Lake Louise, she found mountain rhododendrons blooming at 7,000 feet. Outside of Kamloops she tracked down the yellow clusters of the prickly pear cactus. Each of the hummingbirds illus- trated in the limited edition, 300 set series is placed in an appropri- ate setting: the Rufous with red currant, Anna’s with larkspur, Black-chinned with pear cactus (right) and Calliope with rhodo- dendrons. All of the meticulously painted images will be available, either as prints or originals, at her studio show this Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 1 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m. at 928 Greig Avenue, Brentwood.
