News Crown appeals Armstrong stay Regional crown counsel has appealed a stay-of-proceedings entered on sexual assault charges against former North Saanich Middle School teacher Geoffrey Armstrong. If successful, the appeal will allow the Crown to proceed with the charges, which were quashed in a Nov. 4 decision by Judge Alan Filmer. Judge Filmer cited Crown delays in proceeding with the case as the reason for withdrawing the charges. There was a 22-month delay between the preliminary hearing and the Nov. 4 trial date. The appeal of Filmer’s decision was entered in the B.C. Court of Appeal last week and listed nine reasons for challenging the judge’s decision. No date has been set for the appeal to be heard. Armstrong had been charged with five counts of sexual assault involving three students at the school. Armstrong is no longer working as a teacher.
