Feature Family history kept in stitches by Valorie Lennox The Review TheReview Wednesday, December 2, 1992 — A20 Stitch by stitch, Bill and Marg Haun’s family history is recorded in a special quilt created by their eight children. Daughter Glenda Chapell coor- dinated the 18-month project from her home in Ontario, completing the quilt in time for it to be presented at Bill and Marg’s 50th wedding anniversary celebration in September. Now proudly displayed in their North Saanich home, the quiltisa detailed reminder of family mem- bers and family moments. ‘ A large central panel displays a fF heart-decked silhouette of the cou- ple, a cut-out of St. Mary’s Cathe- dral where the couple were mar- ried on Sept. 19, 1942, and a large 50’ marking their golden anniver- sary. Each of the top eight pancls was done by one of the Haun’s adult children, who filled the panel with reminders of their interests and acuvities while living in the fam- ily home. Whimsical Amish figures of girls mark each of the squares for daughters Patty, Glenda, Shirley, Maureen, Susan and Pauline while rustic boys in overalls mark the squares for sons Bill and Tom. On the back of the quilt are short autobiographies written by each of the Haun’s children. The border of the quilt is filled with doll-like cutouts representing the spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the family. Next are two cottages which the family used on vacations, one at Sylvan Lake and one at Bragg Creek in Alberta. The family bungalow in Calgary is lovingly depicted, complete with a front panel which flips down to reveal the back of the house and the skating rink which Bill Haun created for his family every winter. Next are the family’s two homes in Toronto — one of which also a flip front panel which opens to reveal Marg Haun’s rose garden. The final square illustrates their present waterfront home in North Saanich. With the quilt came a booklet with each of the children’s autobi- ographies and descriptions of the family homes.
