Business Global perspective helpful If continued bad news about the Canadian economy is depressing you, let’s put ourselves in a global perspective. Our North American economies are not as bad as what is happen- ing elsewhere in the world. Let's look at Europe. Instead of a smooth rush towards economic integration, 1992 is proving to leave Europe with financial insta- bility. Bnitain and Italy, by opting for a holiday from the monetary scheme, leaves the European Mon- etary system in crisis. Germany, focused on ils own economy, continues with its high interest rate monetary policy. Maastricht’s envisaged integra- tion of Europe is not occurring as forecast. European integration will occur, but likely at a slower pace and with a much narrower scope. With all the above chaotic events, economic growth forecasts are off sharply for all major coun- tries. Even Germany is expected to flirt with recessionary numbers in 1993. By contrast, North American growth forecasts are expected to be positive and improving into 1993. So Canadians remember, look at the big picture! If anything, Canada and the United States are going to lead world economies out of recession, as Europe seems to be gaining momentum towards recession. As for the Canadian dollar, the bulk of our trading 1s with the United States, so the recent col- lapse in the exchange rate enhances an already bright picture.
