NEWS «xd Views TheReview Wednesday, December 9, 1992 — Cliopings Artificial reef goes to Sechelt as Kinsmen kick off their March The Kinsmen Mothers’ March Campaign is gearing up for Jan- uary. This year the Kinsmen hope to raise $2 Million. They have also made a commitment to the estab- lishment of Canuk Place, a hospice for children with terminal illnesses. They plan to contribute $100,000 to Canuk Place. The 1993 March will take place between January 15th and 31st. Contact your local Kinsmen organization to register as a volun- tcer. * * # Friday the thirteenth was indeed unlucky for Sidney. A permit was issued to the Artificial Reef Society that would permit sinking of the HMCS Chaudiere in Sechelt Inlet. This ended the hopes of local Sidney persons that had applied to have the Chaudiere sunk near the G.B. Church in order to help make Sidney a more popular diving destination. Minister John Cashore said the granting of the permit follows extensive technical review and public consultations. * * The Canadian Chamber of Commerce will offer workshops on creating environmental busi- nesses. Focus 2000 workshops are being delivered to member Chambers at minimal cost. Environment related products, services and technology are areas of growth in a stagnant economy. The objective of the Focus 2000 workshops are to inform partici- pants about environment related business opportunities and help them getting started towards new ventures or products. The audience is expected to be any business which is ready to Start planning for growth and crea- tive ways of increasing sales and profits through the development, production, adaptation or franchis- ing of new environmental related products services or technologies. If you are interested in Focus 2000 contact Gary MacPherson at the Chamber office for details. If the Chamber can generate enough interest we will host a workshop and will be able to do so for a nominal fee. * Ox Sucess stories blossom in a recent publication from Western Economic Diversification Can- ada. A lead article featured a young woman who started as a caterer in Surrey, then developed a recipe for Caribbean Rum Cake. With the support of Western Diversification’s IMI program she attended two trade shows and obiained her first orders. She now sells her products to the Bon Marche and Nordstrom’s in the US. and has shipped 9,000 Ibs. of fruitcake to France. Maureen Simon’s advice to entrepreneurs is to start small and grow.
