There were 30,000 people from almost 200 countries at the Jacob Javits Conference Centre in New York — but to participants from the Peninsula, the event felt almost like a family reunion. “There were so many different cultures attending but they all acted in such harmony I felt like they were all one family,” said apouya Azar. Azar and his brother Houman were among the 15 Peninsula resi- dents who attended the second Baha’i World Congress from Nov. 23 to 26. Although were special youth programs for teenagers like Hou- man and Azar, Houman found no generation gap at the conference. “When T saw all the kids, adults and seniors from all parts of the world interacting together, I could only wish the same for the whole earth and especially Canada. “If it could be done at the Baha’i World Congress, then it is inevitable for the whole earth.” For Houman, the elimination of Tacial prejudice was a keynote of @1e conference. He attended work- ‘shops on racial equality and how to work in his own community to bring about equality. Brian and Debra Berteig of North Saanich agreed the diversity of delegates from throughout the world was one of the most striking aspects of the conference. “Tt was particularly moving to witness the unity of all these nationalities and races in light of the racial problems that are cur- rently plaguing the world today,” Debra Berteig noted. Events during the conference included sessions on the history and progress of the Baha’i Faith since its inception in 1844, eve- nings of entertainment, a youth program and special presentations _on the International Baha’i centre n Haifa, Israel and on the visit of Baha’ leader Abdu’l-Baha to North America in 1912.
