Continued from Page A6 The first bus fitted with pneu- matic tires entered service in 1927, and the RT bus, to which Best refers, succeeded the famous LT bus after the Second World War. By 1930, when my parents dragged me to London from the north of England, the city had more than 4,580 buses’ working 424 routes covering 1,122 miles. In that one year, they consumed 30 million gallons of gasoline. I don’t have the figures for 1946, but you can appreciate that far from “becoming” the standard mode of transportation, the double-decker bus had lone since arrived. Maurice Chazottes North Saanich Dowsing good, not magical Editor: Re: The art of dowsing for public benefits. Thank you for the fascinating feature article on the art of dows- ing, Section B, Dec. 9. There’s a lot, more to dowsing than I realized. - Mr. Lindal and Mr. Russell have researched the topic thoroughly and their stories are compelling. There is more to dowsing than most conventional scientists real- ize or care to admit. However, any attempt to pro- mote dowsing as an omnipotent cure is misleading and potentially damaging. I have ten years experi- ence aS a practicing ground water engineer. However, I have seen no scientific evidence to show that dowsing finds water any better than other techniques. Dowsers claim that they “can move underground veins of water to increase well flows.” I chal- lenge them to prove that one! I don’t doubt that there are many benefits from dowsing. Lin- dal and Russell have obviously experienced benefits. I only ask that dowsers stop leading people to believe that dowsing can magically find water where there is none. Even the most - seasoned ground water scientists refuse to make the type of outra- geous claims that dowsers are famous for. We know that a dry water well can be an expensive mistake. Michael Payne North Saanich Better to refuse wedding inviie Editor: With reference to Mayor Rosko’s comments about amalga- mation of the Peninsula munici- palities, I would like to point out. that while it is nice to receive a wedding invitation, it is not always prudent to attend the wedding! In a recent analysis, if Sidney and the District of North Saanich amalgamated, the taxes in Sidney would decrease by some 38 per cent and those of the District of MUSIC ALL ‘ROUND in this split-lens image of a Parkland school band trumpet player at Sanscha Hall Dec. 5. North Saanich would increase by over 70 per cent. A further suggestion that our police forces amalgamate already exists between Sidney and North Saanich, and a merger into one force with Central Saanich, would . be extremely expensive. The 1993 police budget for North Saanich will be about $400,000. Central Saanich police costs are around $1.2-$1.3 million. This is a community of only about 4,000 more people than North Saanich. Is it any wonder the residents and council of the District of North Saanich are declining the wedding invitation? Also, regarding a letter in last week’s Review from five former mayors, I would like to point out that not one of the five attended the first public hearing on the application for a Setchell Road dock, nor have they viewed any of the plans or letters as amended. In their days as mayors, the approval was given, in most cases, by the provincial government and only sent to council as a courtesy for comment. The present council has turned down as many applications as they have approved, and in all cases, the foreshore is clearly recognized as being public land and access must always be maintained. Coun.
