News RECORDING STARS of the Bayside Middle Schoo! Grade 7 band took time out from rehearsal for a few smiles last Thursday. The artists had just returned from CJIV raacio station where they cut their award-winning track titled Harmony. Bayside besi on Mainland with Harmony by Paul Wyke The Review The gift of music recently went a long way for Grade 7 band students at Bayside Middle School in Brentwood Bay. In fact, the composition of a song submitted to the 1992 McDonald’s A Season of Har- mony contest won first place in the Lower Mainland region. A strange mixup by contest officials had the band listed as being from Burnaby, Bayside band instructor Sidney L. Lott said Thursday. Thursday, 28 out of the 36 band members claimed their prize by Woman hurt in i pursesnaiching An 86-year-old Sidney woman received facial injuries and was transported to Saanich Peninsula Hospital after two youths attempt- ing to snatch her purse knocked her to the ground on Dec. 6. RCMP said the woman was grabbed by the two culpnits around 5 p.m. in front of Scandia Restau- rant on Beacon Avenue. A 14-year-old Victoria youth later turned himself in to the Colwood RCMP. In a similar incident on Nov. 30, an elderly woman walking on Third Street had her purse snatched when she was approached by a male from behind. Anyone with information on these incidents can contact Sidney RCMP or Crimestoppers. venturing to Victoria’s CJVI radio Station to record the song. Writing the lyrics and compos- ing the music for the song, titled Harmony, was an interesting expe- rience, Lott explained. “The kids really wanted some- thing universal that people could identify with,” she said. After toying with ideas like Santa Claus and Christmas, the students came up with the idea of trying to reflect peace, love and harmony in their composition. Using about 15 minutes from the band elective class time since September, the group pieced together the composition and had it written within a couple of weeks, Lott said. Although some students were initially intimidated with the notion of writing their own song, everybody soon warmed up to the idea, she said. Band member Angela Kingerlee found the process of the group writing quite interesting. “Tt was kind of amazing that we — put together the song and none of us are choir members,” Kingerlee said. The band found themselves up against tougher competition than if Saanich North and The Islands Constituency CLIVE TANNER M.L.A. TheReview Wednesday, December 16, 1992 — A22 | TODAY'S REAL ESTATE : eee waeel| Arlene Davidsen Tim Zahar TALK TO THE REALTOR Almost every week, we hear a Realtor tell an anguished tale of working for months with buyers who say they really want a specific kind of home, for example, a classic home built in traditional style. Then they buy a sleek contemporary! Maybe what was most important was the high-tech kitchen or the wooded lot, and these could have counted for more than the style of the house itself. To save you time and to spare you from being shown dozens of homes that are completely inappropriate to your needs, talk to the Realtor who is showing you homes. Explain to him or her what you need. What kind of furniture do you have? Do you have any hobbies that must be accommodated? Are you handy enough to take on major fix-up projects, or do you want a home in move-in condition? What do you like or dislike about your current house? Don’t be the strong, silent type with a Realtor: Provide constant feedback — negative and positive — so he or she can more easily rule out the homes that just won’t work and find the right new home in Saanichton for you and your family. If you are considering a move, please give us, Tim or Arlene, a call at NRS Properties Ltd.
