Appeal rejected An appeal by former Deep Cove resident Raymond Joubert against his conviction for conspiring to import cocaine into Canada was rejected by the Supreme Court of Canada. Joubert is now serving a 20-year sentence. Under a federal law allowing seizure of goods obtained as a result of crime, the Crown is applying to seize the Moses Point home of Joubert and common-law wife Helen Radok. _ That application has been adjourned to Jan. 25. A German exchange student from the regional district of Dachau, in Bavaria, brought greet- ings recently from the Landrat (Chairman) of Dachau to Capital Regional District Chairman Frank Leonard. Antoni Korte, 16, from the vil- lage of Pipinstied in southern Bavaria, is a Rotary International exchange student. - During her one-year stay in Canada, she is a Grade 11 student at Parkland Secondary School in Sidney and the guest of the Ken Stevenson family of Ardmore Drive in North Saanich. Korte brought Leonard a letter of introduction from Hansjorg Chnstmann, Landrat of the Landk- Teises Dachau. She said the Landrat had told her that because of the death camp which operated in Dachau during the Second World War, the area is having a hard time improving its reputation. “Well, times have changed, for- tunately,” Leonard replied. Korte spoke English, having studied the language for six years in school before coming to Can- ada, but Stevenson said he does not know how to speak German. “TI don’t have to because she speaks English so well,’ he added. Leonard later wrote the Landrat, saying, “It was with pleasure I received an exchange student, Miss Antoni Korte, as a represen- tative from the City of Dachau, in my office.” “Miss Korte presented the Capi- tal Regional District with a beauti- ful bock on your city, and I have it proudly displayed in my office for all to see. Thank you,” Leonard said. Road to park geiiing fixed Plans to upgrade the Homathko Road right-of-way were confirmed by the Capital Regional District in a letter received by Central Saa- nich council Dec. 7. Regional district staff are work- ing on a proposal to upgrade the toad from Island View Road northbound to the regional park and two recreational vehicle parks. Regional District Chairman Frank Leonard said he hoped the Toad upgrading “will both accom- modate the development plans for Island View Beach Regional Park and meet with the approval of the municipality and adjacent prop- erty Owners.” He added that design of devel- opment of road access and parking at the regional park must be done to both meet the needs of adjacent property owners and protect the work against unwarranted disturb- ance and encroachment. At the same council meeting a letter was received from adjacent property owners Mr. and Mrs. Gordon (Bud) Michell questioning the delay in developing the road. The Michells pointed out the road allowance was given by four adjoining property owners after the road was gazetted 46 years ago. “Tt is long overdue that this project was completed,” the Michells wrote. Council agreed to sent the Michells a copy of the regional district’s letter. READING WITH SANTA are LauWelnew students who received a gift of new encyclopedias.
