Current plans call for purchase of a truck and chassis this year, with Money to be set-aside for the in- stallation of a custom made box in the 1992 city budget. The total estimated cost of the new truck is in the range of $95,000 and the city will be applying for a 50 percent provincial Joint Emergency Preparedness Planning grant to help defray the cost. The new Terrace emergency rescue truck will be much more versatile and bear few similarities to the current vehicle. The existing rescue vehicle has space for only one passenger, no exterior equip- ment access, inadequate storage space for emergency response equipment and no water supply or pump for fire suppression. In gen- eral, the truck is not adequate for the job and inside storage facilities Art Association needs help to keep local gallery open by Diana English ~ The Terrace Public Art Gallery is alive and well and still living in the lower level of the Public Library. The past year was a shaky one - for the Terrace Art Association, the society that operates the art gallery. They went through a com- plete board change last September and spent most of the year at- tempting to get city funding so the gallery could stay open. According to publicity coordinator Joane Thomson, most of the current board members are now willing to accept a nomination to serve for another year. However, some are unable to and public, artist and member support is needed in order to keep the gallery operating. After interminable delays last year the funding request to the city was refused, However, additional funds were allotted to the Terrace and District Aris Council with the request that the Art Association apply there for money needed to operate the Public Art Gallery. Thomson says they will be apply- ing to the Arts Council but will also be pursuing funding from alternative sources, including ap- LOG} fl redmasiae seebesnbs\Ww ---— Terrace Review —— Wednesday, September 11, 1991 Al3 ~ City to replace aging fire _ department rescue truck -— are considered unsafe. _ Current plans call for a five-ton diesel powered truck chassis equipped with an automatic trans- mission, disc or air brakes, four- person capacity and an air cascade system. An air cascade system consists of large tanks of com- pressed air which can be used to refill Scott air packs or operate compressed air tools. The new vehicle will have a low- . profile and a custom-made, 14-foot . walk-in style box. Exterior access to all equipment will be a plus, and all equipment and cabinets will be installed on slide-out trays. Something new will be a command . radio console, and the truck will be equipped with a 300-gallon water tank and pump. The current emergency rescue vehicle is used for rescue, hazard- ous materials incidents, salvage and overhaul, as a utility vehicle, a First Responder vehicle and as a lighting and power source and plying for grants to bring artists in for workshops. According to summer gallery attendant Cathy Soutar the Public Art Gallery has proven itself as a tourist site and showcase for local artists. She says over 1,500 people visited the gallery during the past summer, Of those, 249 visited the Public Art Gallery on Aug. 3, the Saturday of Riverboat Days week- end.
