Our proposal is for the construction of 200,000 housing starts in Ontario annually for the next five years. “We demand the extension of educaticn, payment of stipends for students attending post- secondary educational institutes, and an end to the elitist attitude to education being fostered by the Tories. “We positively oppose the proposal of the Tories to get out of Canada-wide medical aid and call rather for the allocation of more monies to health services while at the same time taking action to stop doctors from rip- ping off the health scheme.” Put Ontario back to work “Premier Davis doesn’t deny that we have inflation and un- employment,” William Stewart told his audience at the 40th Annual Labor Festival, .“he just denies his government is respon- sible. They have not given up the struggle to regain what they have lost evolution so-far. And they are being joined by imperialism in their effort. “The CIA, the multinationals, NATO, are all in Portugal. And they are active ly supporting those who oppose demo-: cratic and progressive change there,” ‘he charged. “This dangerous game is joined by right wing Socialists headed by Soares who, instead of uniting with the Com- munists and other democratic forces in a common front against monopoly, have joined with right wing political forces against the Armed Forces Movement and the Communist Party. But anti - communism opens the door to counter revo- lution and imperils liberty. It creates the groundwork for a coup which reaction is working for. Only unity of Communists, socialists and catholics; of all anti-fascists, can prevent this and defend the revolution. “The right wing socialists speak of a pluralist society,” Kashtan explained, “but they really mean uniting with | ali right wing political forces in a coalition government whose aim would be the maintenance of monopoly power. _ “The struggle presently under way involves two concepts, two roads — the road back to mo- nopoly power and the power of the big landowners, oF the road of democratic advance, of a united struggle of all demo- cratic and anti-fascist forces to end monopoly power and ad- vance to socialism. This is what the struggle is about in Portugal today,” he said. “Tt js not only a crime that the right wing socialists have lined up with reaction against the Communists and democratic advance; it is no less a. crime for spokesmen of some Commu- nist Parties in Western Europe to publicly criticize: the Commu- nist Party of Portugal, rather than uniting with and assisting the Portuguese Communists in their hour of need, when as Karl Marx said of the Communards, they are literally storming the heavens. : “If the socialists of Europe are able to unite in support of the dangerous line of Soares,” said Kashtan, ‘then the Com- munists of the world should be -able to unite behind the Com- munist Party of Portugal and the struggle against reaction, and imperialism in Portugal. Kashtan appealed to all Com- munist and Workers parties to unite their efforts against the drive to reaction and fascism in Portugal aided by imperialism. They want another Chile in Por- tugal. They must be prevented from achieving this objective. “Weare all heartened by the counter-offensive undertaken by the Communist Party of Portugal against right wing attacks on - their meetings and headquarters.
