SPORTLIGHT By LES MCDONALD With the recent strivings of the Africans in South Africa for freedom, people generally have come to know more about the country than at any time since the Boer war. Pretoria, Cato-Manor and Sharpsville have become household words overnight. In the field of sports the in- quisitive observer is immedi- ately appalled by the racial discrimination existing there, and until recently, the placid acceptance of such a state of affairs by the various interna- tional sports organizations. Cast your memory back.-over the years and try to think of just. one non-white South African who has ever hit the headlines in the sports columns. No there hasn’t been one. That is not to presume that Africans don’t make good athletes. In other parts of the continent, where the suppres- sion of the native people has not been quite so blatant, great sportsmen have emerged to represent: their country, either in the Olympics, like the fam- ous long distance runner Alain their families, and cooped up instead in barracks, to “let off steam,” in tourist delighting tribal dancing and in sports. _ In theory,’the laws of apar- theid should allow segregated teams to represent non-white South Africa. But in practice even this doesn’t happen. This year passports were refused a soccer team about to sail for India, and also the African table tennis team who were going to Dortmund for the world championships. However, as I stated at the beginning, recent events have cast light on all aspects of life in South African, including the intolerable sports scene there. Various countries are now taking steps to boycott, as it were, South Africa in their sports tour itineraries. The 7 F 2 tbe e e ey If you hayen t given all YOU can — give it now.
