habitat projects
get fed money

THE DAY before fisheries minister David Ander-
Son announced the Pacific Salmon Treaty two
weeks ago, he set aside $7 million to improve the
habitat of west coast salmon.

Of that $7 million, $1.3 million bas been set aside for
ifefmorth and central coast. Vancouver Island and the
lower mainland projects were awarded more than $2,5
million each, while projects in the Yukon carned an ad-
ditional $260,000.

The Terrace area will see $145,000 go toward the de-
velopment and surveying of Spring Creek and the
Skeena River watershed,

Triton Environmental Consultants, in conjunction
with the City of Terrace and Northwest Community
College was awarded $80,000 to clean and stabilize
Spring Creek — a coho, pink and chinook salmon
habitat.

Dave Gordon, project manager, said the money
would allow him to hire three or four summer students
within the next two weeks,

He said the money was the second year he has
received a grant from the Department of Fisheries and
Oceans yet the amount this year was a third less than
he expected.

The federal program also gave $65,000 to the Terrace
Salmonid Enhancement Society which will count adult
coho in Skeena tributaries.

Michelle Patterson at 16/37 Community Futures in
Terrace said several groups were wailing for this an-
nouncement since first applying for the projects in Feb-
mary.

“¥ think we submitted 12 or 14 projects,’ she said,
“And they only funded twa.”!

The money was awarded through the federal govert-
meat’s Habitat Restoration and Salmon Enhancement
Program (HRSEP). :
