The ‘‘Q”’ : ‘ doesn’t stand for anything. It’s ROBERT Q. SMITH is the manager of the Terrace Hotel, and he’s brought some ambitious plans with him from his former post as director of sales and marketing for a resort in Penticton. Smith is tooking at totally rejuvenating the hotel's Image. | just to break up the Robert Smith. Friends and acquain- tances call him Q or Robert Q. by Betty Barton Smith hails from Ontario. He recently left a position as Direc- @ tor of Sales and Marketing at the Penticton Lakeside Resort, to take on the challenge of general manager of the Terrace Hotel. He says, “‘It’s a real challenge to come to a town I’d never been to, to learn a lot more about the hotel business, and to start at a hotel wanting to better its image in the community.” Smith has had experience on both sides of the hotel counter. He spent 15 years as a travel ‘agent in London, Ontario, before selling his business and moving to B.C. in 1988. “I love this business,”’ he says. And the people of Terrace will love what he’s doing at the Ter- race Hotel. In addition to almost $.5 million of renovations pres- tel ently underway, Smith plans to create a new image and promote business for both the hotel and the City of Terrace. He would like the Terrace Hotel to become a focal point for banquets, con- ferences, tour groups, business travellers and local residents. After the renovations are completed, his next step will be to promote local awareness, contact travel agents and ‘‘do” trade shows. He has plans for special noon hour luncheon buf- fets in Augie’s Lounge Monday through Thursday. He’ll con- tinue the baron of beef luncheon . on Fridays. Monday through Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., an after-five wind-down will feature complementary hot hors -d’oeuvres. He plans to imple- ment a special bed and breakfast . package with full breakfast plus a bonus coupon book (with dis- counts to various businesses and services in the area). Smith will look into ski packages, golf packages (he’s an avid golfer himself), weekender packages, honeymoon packages and any other package that might appeal to customers.
