“A2- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 12, 2001 Kids’ bazaar back on after teachers’ union gives the OK A LOCAL SCHOOL's Christmas bazaar has been saved after the Terrace and District Teachers Union decided teachers can participate. The rescue of the bazaar foliaws what appears to have been a lack of communication and understanding between administrators, teachers and their union. Clarence Michie) Elementary School principal Bill Gook cancelled its 23rd annual bazaar two weeks ago, saying the current teachers’ job action prevented them fram taking part in special events. Teachers are refusing a range of non-teaching duties, including fund raising, to put pressure on the province in contract talks. Gook said Clarence Michiel union rep , Deb Thame in- itially told him teachers couldn’t fully participate in the bazaar. “tt was a real disappointment,” Gaok said, adding the - bazaar had to be cancelled because teachers are integral to the event. “Is a good cause and it’s a tradition here at Clar- ence Michiel and we just couldn't do it without the help of our teachers.” Thame.later said she gave some optians to Gook as to what teachers could do to help the bazaar’ and what they could not do in relation to the event. She also said neither the B.C, Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) headquarters in Vancouver nor local Terrace District Teacher’ Union (TDTU) president Frank Rowe wete ever specifically told the event was to raise money for an outside charity, in this case the Salvation Army. Teachers are allowed 10 take part if an event is for an outside charity. The charity information only came about last Tues- day, Dec. 4, after Thame met with Clarence Michiel parents. Buying into SCI called a bad idea e:December 18th, By that time Gook had made his cancellation deci- sion and parents were upset. “T expressed that 1 understood their disappointment and that I would bring their their concerns one more time to the union bath locally and provincial and I would seek to gel a definitive, absolutely clear answer on that issue for them,” said Thame. _.Jt was only after that Dec. 4 meeting, Thame conti- nued, that Rowe realized the event was to benefit the Salvation Army, an outside charity. “Now that he- knew that he said there is clarily and that if it is for charity, it could go ahead as planned, providing it had jocal approval,” she said. That approval followed at a Dec. 5 union meeting. Thame also said Clarence Michiel teachers were never tald about Gook’s decision and learned of it read- ing last week's newspaper, published the day after the Dec. 4 meeting between herself and school parents, Gook found out from Thame on Dec. 5 that the bazaar could go ahead. “Certainly we are really excited that the BCTF has realized that this is a little different than normal fun- draising,” Gook said. “We were informed by the TDTU that it can go ahead, So, we’re really grateful and appreciative of the union seéing that this is a special event.” Teachers, students and parents are all working toge- ther to make the necessary preparations for the upcom- ing bazaar. The event is open ta the public and features a craft sale, games, goodies and other activities. Last year it raised $2,200 for the Salvation Army. “It’s a really good cause and we are going to come together and help our community,” said Gook. The bazaar takes place Dec. 20 from 1-3 p.m. -2001 at noon rin. and on like Santa's gift list. | Can You Trust Your Computer | Desk To Hold Up All These - Milk & Cookies?
