To be built at community centre Thornhill gets a daycare THE THORNHILL Com- munity Centre will be the focus of an expansion led by a future tenant. A non-profit society is paying for an expansion at the centre that will be used to house a daycare program. It’s Thornhill’s first-ever purpose-built, licensed group daycare, said Ann -Peltier,. co-chair of the Terrace Daycare Socicty. The program will have 20 spaces for school aged children under 12, ’ A program for preschoo- -fers that would operate during school hours is also in the works. The project will create an additional 1,100 square fect of space that will be’ used exclusively by the ‘Terrace Daycare Society to operate the program. The centre’s entrance -will be extended by about 13 feet, and an L-shaped addition will be construc- ted on the building’s north- east corner. The construction project is scheduled to be comple- ted by April 30. “The Terrace Daycare Society will be spending $145,000 on the addition. It has also entered into a licence of use agreement with the regional district that can be renewed in 10 years.” “Part of that means we have exclusive use on that addition,” Peltier said. The regional district has agreed to spend up to $25,000 for the work that will be done to the hall’s - front entrance, which will be. moved about £3 feet closer to the parking lot. The daycare program ch CHILDCARE ADVOCATES Ann Peltier and Darlene Westerman lock over plans for a daycare centre to be attached to the Thornhill Community Centre. Darlene Westerman of the Terrace and Area Childcare Planning Com- mittee, said architect Dan Condon worked with the regional district and the society to develop plans for the project, which has a slim budget. Zoning requirements meant the daycare would have to join the school’s existing septic syslem, an option that was proble- matic. The regional district then stepped forward with Plan B. Westerman said the re- gional district suggested renovating the Thorohill Community Hall, located next to all three .area- schools. “The RD really came in with a willingness, they wanted this,” Westerman said. “They had some very strong advocates from staff who had a vision.” Peltier said the daycare program will operate all summer long. There’s already a wait- ing list. The Terrace Daycare + Society is now looking for ‘donations of toys, equip- ‘ment and games for the program. By He Wb The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 20, 2002 - A3 News In Brief Mass softwood lumber mail plan dodged CITY COUNCIL will conduct a scaled down effort to lobby U.S. mayors in support of Canada in the softwood lumber dispute. Councillors Lynne Christiansen and Rich McDa- nie! initially wanted the city to send letters to nearly 80 U.S. towns on a list. The idea was pushed by Kitimat councillor Joanne Monaghan, active in the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. But councillor David Hull said postage: alone could cost the cily $800 and envelopes and paper could push the cost to around $1,200, “Frankly 1 think a chain letter is not the way to resolve an international trade dispute,” Hull said at the March 11 council meeting. Mayor Jack Talstra suggested -— and council agreed — that the city would try to send a half dozen letters or so to mayors of U.S. towns where West Fraser ships large volumes of its lumber. New name for Skeena SKEENA CELLULOSE will get a new name to help it leave its past behind, says NWBC Timber and Pulp president Daniel Veniez. “There’s just too much baggage and too much history behind Skeena Cellulose,” Veniez said. “Plus [ just don’t like the name. So it’s going to go into the dustbins of history.” He said a rebranding firm will be hired to work with northwesterners to rename and relaunch the Operations. “It’s needed so it is not only in reality a fresh start, but so it is also perceived as being a fresh start,” he said. Veniez also revealed NWBHC has reached an agreement to have SCI’s pulp sold exclusively by the CellMark Group, a Swedish firm emerging as the world's leading pulp marketing agency. The deal gives SCI greater marketing reach and means it won’t need its own pulp sales staff. “We've given them the worldwide marketing rights for Skeena pulp.” he said. “And in exchange they have contributed $40 million to our working capital account.” Bench street named COHO PLACE will be the name of a new street on the bench.
