PAGE 2 School site ! in question | Minutes of a meeting between . School board officials and Mr, Larry White, Regional Director of Indian’ Affaira were presented at the regular meeting of the School board Tuesday night. At the discussion with Mr. White the subject in question was the location of a school to be built in New Aiyansh. Gordon Robinson, of the Terrace branch of Indian RCMP report AB & E and an attempted break-in earlier in the week may be tied in together but we doubt it. The first was a dry cleaners where perhaps the person who stole $1,000.00 worth of clothes from Ev’s Men’s Wear may have come to get the starchiness out of his new foodies. No? RCMP reported what appeared to be an attempted break-in at Richard’s Dry Cleaners on the corner of Lazelle and Emerson. A wire mesh window valued at $25.00 was broken. No entry was gained however. Earlier on Tuesday, probably in the wee dark hours, . an accomplished gymnast broke into Ev’s Men's Wear by going through a small window in the gable end of the building. He then went through the attic and dropped into the store where he lifted $1,000.00 worth of leather jackets and shirts, He went out the back door. RCMP are investigating. Ciara Holenstein, of Terrace, was charged with failing ta yield the right of way ina $1,900 collison at Halliwell and Sparks on Tuesday afternoon. She apparently didn’t see a vehicle driven by Gerda Wiedeck and struck it at the intersection. There were no injuries, affairs in commenting on the School said that building a “ provincially operated school for 4 reserve was a new concept in . the history of the bureau. The native people of New Aiyansh requested that type of school which will serve ali the children in the area, Negotiations between the Scheol board and Indian affairs are still going on. No -binding decision can be made until the site is jointly agreed upon, The board has stressed that the school cannot be built on reserve land. But Mr. White pointed out that the village of New Aiyansh is not strictly reserve land. The village was. built when Old Aiyansh was flooded and is technically crown land. He also pointed out that the village was the most convenient place for the children to travel to, If the decision presently resting in the hands of the Supreme Court of Canada regarding the Nishga Band’s aboriginal Tights to land in the Nass Valley, is made in the Nishgas favor, perhaps the site of the new school will no 9 longer be @ problem.
