SECOND CLASS MAIL REGISTRATION NO. 0128 | Convention centre needed locally The success of Gillain Manor, now called Dunsmuir Lodge, as a convention centre will also mean increased business for the Peninsula. After 18 months of experimenting and trying to put the deluxe facility at the top of the north slope of Mount Newton to a profitable use, the Island Pacific Institute Foundation, headed by University of Victoria president Howard Petch, has decided to make the facility into a convention centre which will fill a void locally. Manager Rob Cameron plans to use local businesses to complement the services Dunsmuir will offer. For ex- ample, because the mountain complex runs on well water and holding tank systems, patrons will be en- couraged to use Panorama Leisure Centre for recreation purposes. — Likewise, if tourists arrive on the doorstep. of the lodge, Cameron said he will recommend local hotels and motels rather than accept tourist trade. However, if local accommodation facilities are booked up and Dunsmuir has the room, it will act as an overflow facili- ty for tourist traffic. In short, Dunsmuir hopes to attract more people na- tionally and internationally to the Peninsula . _something everyone locally is hoping for. And its success could mean a turning point for the -four major Peninsula business and industrial centres.
