Being blest (?) by an “insatiable” curiosity like Kip- ling’s elephant’s child, people and places are of unending interest to the writer. So would I speak of an old timer on Salt Spring island or “‘Armiral’s Island’? — caressed by the s@a. Salt Spring Island is now well known as a pleasure spol, but how many residents know that St. Mary’s Lake was known as Mallandaine’s Lake in honor of E. Malladaine, an early pre-emptor on the north end of the island facing Trin- comali Channel? . That the salt springs from which our island gets its present name were also named for him. that that portion of the island was then called GrantviHe? The Begg settle- ment adjoined Mallandaine’s land. Gerryborough was another name for this vicinity. These old mind old timers there about. Adams, Lambert, Begg, Copeland, & Elliot, Captain Walker, Stephen's, Gerry. Mills Tremaine. and Pimberys. names recall to Pierce also Chambers Doubtless many old timers remember the Mallandaines later years attending the services in the old wooden structure of Christ Church Cathedral, where old Godden was the verger and the young sons, Edward and Charles Mallandaine, the latter who became an enthusiastic yachts- man, also other members of the family. in Charles’ sloop-rigged vessel fitted with a gas engine for windless hours accommodated five persons in the cabin and was a lovely sight as she sailed the clear waters around Victoria and the Gulf Islands. Once she beached herseif in Trincomali Channel and after Charles Mallandaine’s death became the property of Bert Roe, Pender Island.
