By PEGGIE ROWAND Back in August Air Cadet Squadron 676 in Sidney was on top of the world after being named top. squadron of B.C. and winners of the D.R. MacLean trophy. : _.. Just two months later some 80 shocked youngsters in the squadron learned the coveted trophy had gone to Victoria’s 89th squadron which had previously been nominated second place. Their commanding officer, Major P.S. Perry made the discovery Oct. 16 when he attended the Air Cadet League Conference in Vancouver and witnessed presentation of the MacLean trophy to the 89th squadron. ‘Perry said Saturday he was stunned and bitterly disappointed on behalf of the cadets — and very angry. In discussion witha league representative after the award to 89th squadron he was told 676 squadron didn’t receive the trophy because of the poor assessment that had been given its sponsoring committee, Victoria Kinsmen. This assessment was the B.C. Cadet League. But that’s unjust, Perry said. | Squadron 676 cadets and staff ~ cannot be held responsible for the performance of a sponsoring committee, which has nothing to do with the requirements for assessing the achievements of a squadron, he pointed out. Squadron standard of efficiency is determined by the region commander on the basis of reports by the person conducting the annual. inspection and the officer responsible for. cadet matters at region headquarters. Squadron 676 received excellent evaluation on the annual inspection and a number of other inspections, receiving 98 per cent — the highest mark of any squadron in B.C. The Sidney cadets were acclaimed top squadron and pune announcements were made. Its been a crushing blow to Sidney cadets but Perry is in there fighting, along with parents. “nunbers’ By JOHN GREEN ‘The ‘court challenge of ‘two. “pers ~ North: Saanich bylaws . mitting - Bob Wright's marina. development in. Perry says the officer has written to Canadian Forces Headquarters, Ottawa, He is not entirely. hopeful changes will be made and the »MacLean trophy will pass to squadron 676 where it truly belongs but trophy or not, Perry says 676 is the top squadron in B.C. and will continue to recognize itself as such.
