the incident was a plot between Alan
Cornford and. Harold Parrott to
install Parrott’ by acclamation and
“then elect Jim > Cumming, Alan

Cornford: and Dick Herlinveaux as
aldermen.

The drama began when Grieve
arrived atthe municipal offices to
file papers for mayor at about four
minutes. to noon. (Nominations
closed at noon). He put his papers
down on Green’s desk and noted
Alan Cornford was also in the room
filing papers for an aldermanic seat.
Previously, Cornford had
announced he.-was. running for
mayor.

Grieve suggested. he withdraw
while Green attended to Cornford

and says he was ‘‘assured’’ by the
clerk. that. ‘‘since I. was in’ the
building before noon that the time
limit had been met.’

Grieve says on that basis ‘1 went

and stood outside.”’

After Cornford came out Grieve
was attended to by Green who
“shook me by the hand and wished
me the best of luck.”’

Subsequent to Grieves’ departure

Cornford went. back into Green’s —

office at 12:30.p.m., this time to file
another set of papers for mayor and
apparently without withdrawing his
